What are the must-have tripods for a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV?

What tripods are you guys actually using with your 5D Mark IV these days? I finally upgraded and I'm so stoked but my old cheap tripod definitely wont hold this beast especially with my heavy 24-70mm lens attached.

I'm torn between:

  • Manfrotto 055 Carbon Fiber
  • Peak Design Travel Tripod (Carbon)

The Manfrotto seems like a tank but the Peak Design is so small for my hiking trip to Zion next month. Budget is capped at $600 since the camera was pricey lol. Is the Peak Design sturdy enough for long exposures or should I just suck it up and carry the heavier Manfrotto?

Unfortunately I had issues with the PD legs. Vibration dampening just wasnt as good as expected for long exposures with heavy glass... lost some sharp shots in Zion because of it. Check out the Benro Mach3 TMA37C Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod. Its way stiffer than the Sirui W-2204 Waterproof Carbon Fiber Tripod and has better torsional rigidity for high-res sensors, tho the Sirui handles sand better.

After years of using heavy gear, I hiked Zion with the Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber.

  • Packable for trails
  • Reliable stability tho Im very satisfied with it.

^ This. Also, PD was not as good as expected for long exposures. Get the Feisol Tournament CT-3442 Rapid Carbon Fiber Tripod. Its way stiffer and handles canyon winds much better.

I had issues with my first lightweight hiking tripod and it was honestly such a letdown. Unfortunately, those thin legs just didnt cut it for a heavy rig like the 5D Mark IV. I was so disappointed when I got back from a trip and realized half my long exposures were slightly blurry. It was definitely not as good as expected. If you want reliability on your Zion trip, I really suggest looking at the Leofoto LS-324C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod. It is a bit beefier than the Peak Design but way more stable because it doesnt have a center column. That lack of a column is actually a massive plus for stability because it cuts down on potential vibrations from the wind. Pair it with a decent head like the Leofoto LH-40 Low Profile Ball Head and you are still way under your $600 limit. Another solid choice is the Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ 263CT Carbon Fiber Tripod. It has these multi-angle legs that are a lifesaver when you are trying to get the camera level on uneven canyon rocks. Just dont go too cheap on the legs or you will end up frustrated like I was. You want something that stays put when the mirror slaps.
