Ive got this massive 10 hour music festival gig coming up in Chicago next month and honestly my hands already hurt thinking about holding my 90D that long without a vertical grip. Im trying to decide if I should just bite the bullet and get the official Canon BG-E14 or save some cash with the Neewer or maybe the Vello one. The Canon is like 150 bucks which is pretty steep right now since I just dropped a ton on a new 70-200mm. I heard the third party ones can sometimes have weird shutter button lag or drain the batteries faster but the price difference is huge. Is the build quality on the Vello actually close enough to the real thing to risk it for a professional gig?

I've been shooting events for years and honestly, the price tag on the official gear is just wild sometimes! You definitely dont need to shell out $150 for the official brand when third-party options have come such a long way. I personally used the Vello BG-C10 Battery Grip for Canon EOS 70D 80D 90D for a three-day outdoor festival series and it was fantastic. The ergonomics are basically identical to the original and the weight distribution with a heavy lens like your 70-200mm is just life-changing for your wrists!!

  • Verify the gold contact pins are clean of any manufacturing oils to prevent communication errors or battery drain issues.
  • Secure the mounting wheel firmly and check it periodically during the 10-hour shift as third-party housings can occasionally flex more than the Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip for EOS 70D 80D 90D. The Vello build quality is actually super impressive for the price point. It feels sturdy in the hand and the shutter button has that nice tactile click you expect from professional gear. If you're worried about reliability for a pro gig, just make sure you test it out for a few hours before heading to Chicago... but I really think you'll find it amazing. You're gonna love how much easier those vertical shots become with the extra grip space!

Regarding what #1 said about "I've been shooting events for years and honestly, the price tag on the official gear is just wild sometimes!"

  • I totally get where they are coming from, but be careful with the weather sealing for an outdoor Chicago festival. The Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip matches the 90D gaskets perfectly, while the Neewer NW-90D Battery Grip for Canon EOS 90D/80D/70D usually leaves those gaps exposed to dust and moisture. Technically, the official grip has better voltage regulation. I've seen the Vivitar VIV-PG-70D Professional Battery Grip cause minor AF lag with heavy lenses like your 70-200mm because the internal wiring is thinner than the OEM stuff. Also, make sure to check the mount tension regularly so you dont get a communication error mid-shoot if the grip wiggles slightly. TL;DR: Neewer is a great value for casual use, but for a professional 10-hour gig, the Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip is much more reliable for power stability and weather protection. Just let me know if you need more detailed tech specs on the pin layouts!

Just catching up here... ugh, the struggle of gear pricing is so real it hurts. Spending that much on plastic after a big lens purchase feels like a total punch in the gut.

  • I think I heard the contacts on cheap ones can be finicky? Not 100% sure.
  • Balancing that heavy gear is just gonna be exhausting no matter what you buy... my back is killing me. It really sucks trying to figure this out on a budget.
