So Ive got this trip to Costa Rica coming up in three weeks and honestly Im lowkey panicking about my gear setup. Im shooting with a Canon 90D and mostly doing wildlife stuff, so I know Im gonna be burning through batteries like crazy with the high burst rate and the autofocus working overtime.

Ive been looking at grips because I need that extra juice and the vertical controls for portrait shots of birds in the trees. The official Canon BG-E14 seems like the safe choice but man, the price tag is killing me right now after paying for my flights and gear insurance. I keep seeing the Neewer and Vello ones on Amazon for a fraction of the cost, but then I read these horror stories on some random blogs about third-party grips causing 'err 01' codes or just totally draining the batteries overnight while the camera is supposed to be off. One guy even said his Vello grip felt like cheap plastic and the shutter button was super mushy compared to the body.

Im on a strict 80 dollar budget for this and I really cant afford to have my camera glitch out in the middle of the rainforest. Is the build quality on the off-brand ones actually that bad or are people just being elitist? Should I just bite the bullet and try to find a beat-up used OEM one or is there a specific third-party brand that actually feels solid and wont fry my electronics...

Regarding what #1 said about "> Im on a strict 80 dollar budget..."

  • I agree that Vello is usually the go-to for third-party stuff, but you really gotta watch out for the weather sealing. Costa Rica is basically a giant steam room, and those cheaper grips often skip the rubber gaskets found on official gear. If moisture hits the communication pins, you're looking at a short circuit or a bricked camera mid-hike. Technical tip: off-brand grips sometimes struggle with the handshake protocol for the Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery, which leads to that overnight drain. I would suggest hunting for a used Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip for EOS 70D, 80D, 90D instead. You can usually snag one for around $75 on the used market. It has the proper seals and build quality to handle the humidity, which is basically mandatory for wildlife shooting. It wont fail you when the rain starts.

Ive had great luck with the Vello BG-C10 Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D on similar trips. It feels way sturdier than the ultra-cheap brands and the buttons arent mushy. If you want total peace of mind tho, look for a used Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip on eBay or MPB. They usually hit your price point.
