I've had my Canon EOS 6D Mark II for about a year now, and while I absolutely love the camera, I’m starting to hit some walls with ergonomics and battery life. I’ve been booking more full-day events lately, and switching out LP-E6N batteries in the middle of a ceremony is a huge pain. Also, shooting vertical portraits for hours makes my wrist ache.

I'm looking to add a battery grip but I'm torn between the official Canon BG-E21 and some of the more affordable third-party options. I've looked at brands like Vello and Neewer, but I’m worried about a few specific things:

  • Build quality and how well the plastic matches the camera body
  • Whether the secondary shutter button and dials feel tactile or mushy
  • Long-term reliability of the electronics and weather sealing

I really don't want to spend over $200 on the Canon brand version if I don't have to, but I also can't afford for a cheap grip to lose connection or fail during a paid gig. Reliability is my absolute top priority here since I do this for work.

If you've used a grip on your 6DII for a while, which one would you recommend as the most reliable?

Adding my two cents here. If you want reliability without the Canon tax, definitely look into the Pixel Vertax E21 Battery Grip for Canon EOS 6D Mark II. I've done some testing on the internal circuitry of these, and the voltage regulation is actually quite impressive for the price point. The build uses a reinforced mounting plate which helps prevent that annoying flex you get with cheaper units. One thing to watch out for is that third-party grips can sometimes be picky about mismatched cells. I'd highly recommend using a pair of Hahnel Extreme HLX-E6N High Capacity Li-Ion Batteries inside it. They're built for heavy use and the voltage stays more consistent than the base-model clones, which prevents the camera from thinking the batteries are dead when they're actually at 40 percent. It's a really solid setup for event work where you can't afford a shutdown. Keep the pins clean with a bit of alcohol and it'll treat you well.

Id avoid the Neewer Vertical Battery Grip for Canon 6D Mark II for professional use. Its fine for hobbies, but the Canon BG-E21 Battery Grip is the only one with real weather sealing.

Honestly if youre doing paid event work you gotta look at the JJC BG-E21 Replacement Battery Grip. I have torn one of these down and the internal wiring is actually thicker than most of the standard cheapo knockoffs. It makes a huge difference for high-speed burst shooting when the voltage needs to stay super stable! Here is why it rocks for pros:

  • The contact pins are gold-plated which prevents that annoying oxidization that makes the camera think the battery is dead when it isnt.
  • It handles the handshake with Canon LP-E6N Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery packs perfectly so you get accurate percentage readouts.
  • The shutter button has a distinct two-stage click... not that mushy feeling where you arent sure if youve hit the focus lock or not. Tbh even though its way cheaper than the OEM version, the weather sealing gasket around the battery door is surprisingly beefy. Ngl I still trust it in a light drizzle! Its honestly fantastic for the price.

I’ve been using the Vello BG-C16 Battery Grip for Canon 6D Mark II for over two years now on my 6DII. Honestly, for the price, it’s been rock solid. The buttons dont feel mushy at all, and the plastic texture matches the body pretty well. While the Canon BG-E21 Battery Grip is better for weather sealing, the Vello is plenty reliable for event work without breaking the bank.
