Hey everyone! I’ve been a loyal Canon EOS 5D Mark III user for several years now, and despite all the mirrorless hype lately, I’m still absolutely in love with the build quality and the organic feel of this sensor. That said, I’ve hit a bit of a creative wall. I’ve spent most of my time lugging around a heavy 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom, and while it’s a total workhorse, I’m starting to crave the simplicity and the unique rendering that only a fast prime lens can provide.

I’m looking for that one "versatile" prime lens that can basically live on my camera 80% of the time. My main interests are street photography, environmental portraits, and the occasional low-light indoor gathering with family. I’m really torn between the classic 35mm and 50mm focal lengths. I love the storytelling wide-angle look of the 35mm, but I’m worried about perspective distortion when I want to get a bit closer for a portrait. On the flip side, the 50mm feels very natural to the eye, but sometimes it feels just a bit too tight when I'm walking through narrow city streets.

I’ve been eyeing the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM because it’s compact and has image stabilization, but I’ve also heard the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art is legendary for its sharpness, even if it is a bit of a brick. My budget is capped at around $700, so I’m definitely open to looking at the used market to get the best glass possible for my money. I really want something that balances tack-sharp focus with that creamy bokeh we all love.

For those of you still rocking the 5D Mark III, what is your "go-to" prime lens for everyday use? If you had to pick just one focal length that handles everything from travel to dimly lit dinners, which one would you choose and why?

Oh man, I feel u... still rocking my Canon EOS 5D Mark III too, that sensor just has a soul mirrors cant touch!! Honestly, ditching that heavy zoom is gonna be the best thing u ever did for ur back lol. For your situation, here is what I recommend: 1. Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM - This is basically the perfect 'walkaround' lens. Since u mentioned narrow streets and indoor gatherings, that extra width is a lifesaver. Plus, the Image Stabilization is reallyyy helpful for low-light shots when ur shutter speed drops. It doesnt have that crazy f/1.2 look, but its light enough to leave on all day without getting tired. 2. Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Canon EF - If u want the absolute best image quality and creamy bokeh, this is it. But honestly... be careful, its a total brick. If ur trying to escape the weight of the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, this might not be the answer. Its also kinda tight for indoor dinners iirc. I think the 35mm is the way to go. I found the 35mm perspective way more natural for 'life' shots. Perspective distortion isnt too bad unless ur doing super tight headshots, just step back a bit! Make sure to check the used market, u can find one for like $400 easily. GL with the hunt tho, hope this helps!! 👍

Curious about one thing: when you're shooting those indoor family gatherings, do you usually find yourself backing into walls to fit everyone in?? Honestly, the choice between 35 and 50 really comes down to your "working distance" in those tight spots. Before I give full advice, here are two quick tips to protect your wallet:
* Buy used from places like KEH or MPB. You can snag a Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM for way under your $700 budget if youre patient!! * Rent both for a weekend first. Its way safer than dropping $700 and realizing the 50mm is just too tight for narrow street work. In my experience, I've seen many people regret the weight of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for casual walking... it really is a total brick. Anyway, let me know about your space situation first... gl!!
