I shoot video with my Canon EOS 90D—interviews and short films—and need a microphone to improve audio quality. My budget’s $200, and I’d prefer something that mounts easily, like a shotgun or lavalier mic. The Rode VideoMic Pro and Audio-Technica ATR3350iS are in consideration. What’s the best microphone for my 90D to get crisp, clear sound?

The Rode VideoMic Pro+ and Audio-Technica ATR3350iS are both solid choices within your budget. For interviews and short films with your 90D, the directional Rode VideoMic Pro is generally preferred for capturing cleaner dialogue on-camera. The ATR3350iS is a decent lavalier, better suited for situations where you need a hidden mic close to the subject. Consider the Movo VXR10 as a budget-friendly alternative shotgun mic.

I really have to agree with the point about reliability being the most important factor when you're starting out. After using the 90D for almost two years now, the one small thing I wish I knew earlier is how much the internal preamps can hiss if you dont set them right. Whatever you end up getting, make sure you turn off the Auto level in the camera menu and set it manually to a low setting. It sounds SO much cleaner and saves you a ton of time in post-production. TBH it's the most underrated tip for this specific body. Idk why more people dont talk about it, but it makes a HUGE difference in the long run.

Before you pull the trigger, are you planning to do most of your filming indoors in a controlled space, or are you going to be out in the elements? Tbh, I always worry about the reliability of some of these setups... nothing worse than a mic dying halfway through a one-time interview or a short film shoot where you can't easily reshoot. If you want my two cents, just stick with any of the dedicated video mics from a brand like Rode or Sennheiser. You really can't go wrong with the established names because they actually build their stuff to last (at least that's what worked for me). I've had too many cheap cables short out or battery doors snap off on the budget off-brand stuff. You basically want something that's built like a tank so you don't have to worry about your audio cutting out while you're focused on the 90D's screen... definitely worth the peace of mind.

Any updates on this?

If you're doing any kind of run-and-gun shooting, look at the DJI Mic Mini. Not technically a mic, but a wireless system that gives you incredible flexibility. I use the transmitters with lavaliers for interviews and as on-camera mics when needed. The dual-channel receiver plugs right into the 90D's mic input and the sound quality is fantastic.
