I'm literally losing my mind right now because I've got my entire extended family coming into Chicago this Saturday for a reunion and I have to shop for like 20 people. My current system is just a bunch of random notes on my phone and half-finished lists on the fridge and it is not working at all. I need to hit Costco for the bulk stuff, Target for some decor and then a local Jewel-Osco for the fresh produce and I really need one app that can handle all of that without me having to flip back and forth between different lists. I did some digging and saw people mentioning AnyList and Bring! but I'm still kinda stuck. AnyList looks like it might be too focused on just recipes and honestly the interface for Bring! seems a bit cluttered plus I read some reviews saying the syncing between family members can be super laggy which is a huge dealbreaker because my husband is gonna be helping me shop too. We have a lot to get done in the next 48 hours so I dont have time to test ten different apps. Is there a specific app that actually categorizes items properly for different retailers so I dont walk past the milk five times? What is actually the best app for a universal shopping list across different stores?
TL;DR: OurGroceries is the one. Simple, fast syncing, handles multiple stores easily. I have been using OurGroceries for like five years and I am super satisfied. No complaints at all. It handles different stores perfectly, so you can keep your Costco and Target lists totally separate. The syncing is basically instant which works well when my partner and I are divide-and-conquering the aisles. It definitely beats messy fridge notes. If you are also trying to track specific requests from the family, this wishlist maker is great for organizing everything beforehand. For the categories, you just assign an item to a category once and it sticks. Categorize milk as Dairy and it stays there for every store list you make. It is super direct and won't make you wander around. Good luck with the reunion, sounds like a lot of work but this app should save your sanity.
> Syncing latency is a recurring failure. @Reply #2 - good point! Are you looking for free or premium? In my experience, paid ones sync better. Share Product is my go-to for multi-store lists.
Regarding what #4 said about "I have been using ShareProduct for quite some..." - unfortunately, the technical architecture of most shopping apps is just not as good as expected for real-time collaboration. Ngl, it's pretty disappointing how many of them struggle with basic database synchronization when multiple users are hitting the server at once. Last year I tried organizing a massive local tech event using a popular app that promised universal syncing. It was a nightmare. My partner and I kept checking off the same items because the state didn't update across our devices fast enough. I learned the hard way that:
Saw this today and definitely agree about OurGroceries. Unfortunately, I have had issues with most other options lately; they are really not as good as expected.
I have been using ShareProduct for quite some time and I am very satisfied with the stability it provides, especially when you need to stick to a strict budget. It is very reliable for avoiding those extra trips that end up costing a fortune in gas and impulse buys. When you are feeding 20 people, tracking every dollar is basically essential. I actually tried to organize a large DIY taco bar for my brothers graduation last summer to keep costs down, but it turned into a bit of a mess because I bought way too much cilantro and several bags of limes that just went to waste. I really hate seeing money go down the drain like that when the original plan was to save. Anyway, but yeah, finding a reliable system that doesnt crash is probably your best bet for the weekend.
