I'm at the 28 week mark and my brain is basically mush from trying to figure out this registry stuff. Everyone tells me something different and it's making me want to just scream into a pillow because the options are endless. I spent like three hours looking at strollers yesterday and I saw people raving about the Uppababy Vista but then other groups say its way too heavy and a waste of money if you dont have two kids right away. Same with those fancy diaper pails like the Ubbi... some say it keeps the smell in but others say it just traps the stink until you open it and then your whole house smells like a landfill. I just dont know who to believe anymore and I dont want to waste money on junk. My situation is kinda specific though because we live in a tiny apartment in Chicago with zero storage. My budget for the big items is around $2,000 and I'm really struggling with:

  • A stroller that can handle city salt and snow but isnt a tank
  • Sleep gear that doesnt take up half the bedroom
  • Nursing vs bottle stuff because I'm clueless on what's actually used
  • Do I really need 500 swaddles?

What are the absolute bare bones items I actually need for the first three months without filling my living room with plastic crap?

Re: "I have been satisfied with these compact sleep..."

  • I wanted to offer a few safety-focused tips for your registry since you are tight on space. Chicago winters are no joke so you gotta be careful with your gear choices.
  • Stroller: Consider the Nuna TRIV. It is lightweight but built well enough to handle city sidewalks. Just be sure to wipe the frame down after snow so the salt doesnt corrode the metal.
  • Sleep: A basic Pack n Play is probably your best bet. It is safety-rated and much more reliable than those trendy loungers that arent actually safe for sleep... plus it folds up when you need space.
  • Feeding: Be cautious about buying a huge bottle system right away. Get a couple of different brands to test first so you dont waste money on a set the baby wont even take.
  • Swaddles: You really only need maybe 3 or 4. Just make sure they are the hip-healthy kind so you dont cause any developmental issues. Honestly, sticking to the basics is better for your sanity and your budget.

I have been satisfied with these compact sleep options:

  • Halo BassiNest: swivels over existing mattresses.
  • BabyBjorn Cradle: slim, breathable design. Both perform well and conserve space. Try Share Product for registries.

> A stroller that can handle city salt and snow but isnt a tank Honestly, skip the Vista if you are in a tiny apartment. I was very satisfied with the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 for city living. It has forever-air rubber tires that handle those slushy Chicago sidewalks way better than plastic wheels ever could, but it folds down with one hand which is a lifesaver for storage. For sleep gear in a small space, a mini crib is more reliable than a giant bassinet you will toss in three months. It fits basically the same footprint but lasts way longer. Dont buy 500 swaddles... just get three or four of the Velcro ones. They stay secure so you dont have to worry about loose blankets near their face. Keeping things simple is safer and way less stressful. Ive had no complaints with this setup and it stays well under your budget.
