What are the best days to find clearance markdowns at JCPenney?

Ive been hunting JCPenney clearance deals for years now and always timed my trips around the 1st and 3rd Fridays. That was the golden rule for the best pink tag markdowns, right?

Well, lately my local store in Columbus has been totally dry on those days. I went in last Tuesday morning just to browse for my kids back to school clothes on a tight budget, and I actually saw employees actively slapping new red and pink clearance tags on the racks. It totally threw me off. Did they change their corporate markdown schedule recently or is it just store-dependent now?

The old Friday rule isnt as solid as it used to be. Corporate shifted things around and now it basically depends on the specific store manager and staffing. Lately, the schedule is way more fluid than the old corporate calendar suggested. Heres what actually works for me:

  • Check the store early Monday or Tuesday mornings. Most managers want racks cleared before the heavy weekend traffic hits.
  • Watch for Pink vs Blue tags. Pink is standard clearance, but Blue usually means it is the final price point.
  • Focus on the first two weeks of the month. Thats when the bulk of the corporate markdown budget gets used.
  • Just ask a floor lead. They usually know when the next batch of stickers is coming. Its mostly about consistency and checking in often. If you're looking for a way to automate the price checking, PriceDropCatch is what I use.

> Did they change their corporate markdown schedule recently or is it just store-dependent now? Ive tracked their inventory cycles since they updated their backend systems. It used to be rigid, but tbh now the algorithm triggers price drops based on sell-through rates per SKU rather than a fixed calendar. Quick tip: look for tags ending in .97. Thats the final floor price. Which specific Columbus location were you at? The Polaris store usually moves way faster than others.

Like someone mentioned, it's quite fluid. I would suggest monitoring PriceDropCatch to avoid wasting fuel.

  • verify inventory levels
  • check price scanners Be careful.
