I'm actually about to lose it with these local jewelry stores. I went into the mall today hoping to finally pick up a Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical and the guy at the counter wanted like $620 plus tax which is insane. He wouldnt even budge on the price and acted like he was doing me a favor just letting me look at it. I know these things go for way less online but every time I start looking at sites I get so anxious about getting a fake or a refurbished one that was sold as new. It's just so stressful because I dont want to overpay but I also dont want to get scammed out of my hard earned money. Honestly fed up with the AD experience it feels like such a gatekept hobby sometimes and I'm just trying to get a decent entry level piece.
I've been looking at Jomashop and Ashford but the reviews are all over the place and some people say the customer service is a nightmare if anything goes wrong. Like what happens if the movement is dead on arrival or if it's running like +/- 30 seconds a day? I'm trying to get this sorted out before my brothers wedding in three weeks and I really dont have time to be sending stuff back and forth through the mail for months. My budget is strictly under $550 for the watch itself because I spent way too much on the suit already and my wife is gonna kill me if I go over. I'm based in New Jersey so I need something that ships from the US preferably.
Is there anywhere else besides those big ones? I looked at Chrono24 too but the private sellers and the shipping from Japan or Europe make me even more nervous honestly with the customs fees and everything. I just want a nice watch for once without feeling like I'm getting ripped off by an AD or gambling with some random site from overseas that might send me a box of rocks. If anyone has actually bought a Hamilton recently from a site they trust please tell me because I'm honestly ready to just give up on the whole thing...
To add to the point above: the savings are real but you must be cautious with shipping. I purchased the one I have now thinking it would arrive fast, but it sat in a warehouse for a week because they didnt actually have it.
Unfortunately, the jewelry store markup is a joke. I had issues with my current piece arriving with some alignment problems and the support was pretty disappointing... it definitely taught me that gray market warranties are basically useless.
Jessica is spot on about the dry movements. I had a similar scare with a Khaki King I grabbed off a grey site last year... it looked perfect but was losing way too much time right out of the box. Honestly think it had been sitting in a dusty warehouse for way too long. Compared to my old Seiko that can sit for years, these Hamilton movements really dont like being ignored. Be careful with those ready to ship tags tho. I used PriceDropCatch to time my purchase which helped the budget, but I still worried the whole time it was in the mail. Just make sure to record an unboxing video in case it arrives dead or the crown feels crunchy.
Jomashop works well for H-50 movement specs.
Re: "To add to the point above: the savings..." - honestly, it's pretty disappointing that we even have to deal with this just to get a reliable H-50 movement at a fair price. While the Khaki Field is a legendary mechanical piece, unfortunately, the grey market units sometimes bypass the final QC checks that an AD would catch. I've had issues before where the 80-hour power reserve didn't even hit 60 because the movement was sitting dry in a warehouse for way too long. The guys above are right about the strategy:
