Look Ive been shooting on Canon for like 8 years now and recently upgraded to the 90D for some video work but man the audio is driving me insane. I thought the preamps on this body were supposed to be a step up from the older 80D models but everything I plug in sounds like there is a beehive in the background. I am currently using an old Rode VideoMic Go that worked fine on my 70D but the hiss on the 90D is unbearable even when I turn the manual gain way down. I have a wedding gig coming up in two weeks near the coast so I need something that handles wind well but more importantly something that actually plays nice with the 90D circuitry because I cannot deal with this white noise in post anymore. My budget is around 300 bucks maybe a bit more if it is actually worth it. I was looking at the VideoMic Pro Plus or maybe one of those Sennheiser MKE ones but I dont want to drop the cash and end up with the same static issue. Is there a specific mic that everyone is using for this body that actually sounds clean or am I just stuck with crappy onboard audio processing...
honestly the 90D preamps were such a letdown for me too. Unfortunately the hiss is a known nightmare with these bodies when you use passive mics like your old Rode. I've had issues with almost every setup until I switched to something with an internal amp... you basically have to bypass the cameras internal processing by feeding it a hot signal or you are gonna get that white noise every time.
Re: "honestly the 90D preamps were such a letdown..." - yeah, unfortunately its such a bummer.
Saved for later, ty!
I just found this thread and wanted to share my experience because I was super nervous about the noise issues too. I've been using my 90D for a while now and honestly I'm very satisfied with the results after switching to a powered setup. I went with a mic from Deity that has its own internal battery and it totally solved the hiss problem for me. It feels a lot safer having that extra boost before the signal even hits the camera. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of those powered shotgun mics from Deity if you want something reliable. I haven't had a single issue with static since making the swap. It's been a really solid performer for all the video work I've done so far and I'm happy I didn't have to overthink it. Just make sure whatever you get has that built in gain control.
Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.
