Which external flash works best with the Canon Rebel T7?

So I bought a Canon T7 a few months back and I am finally realizing the built-in flash is honestly kinda garbage for indoor shots. It is way too harsh and everything just looks flat and weird. I have been looking into getting an actual external flash but I am super confused because I read online that the T7 is missing some center pin on the hot shoe? Apparently that makes a lot of cheap flashes not work at all which is super frustrating because I am on a budget.

I am trying to stay under $200 if possible because I still need to buy a decent bag and maybe a tripod later this month. I am mainly going to be shooting my sisters engagement party in like three weeks so I am on a bit of a deadline here. I live in a pretty small town so I have to order everything online and cant really go to a shop to test stuff out in person.

I have narrowed it down to a couple options but I am torn between them:

  • Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT: I know this one will definitely work because it is Canon brand but it is pushing my budget at like $250 or more new. Is it really worth the extra cash just for the name?
  • Godox V860III-C: I have seen some people say this is better than the Canon ones but I am worried about that pin issue I mentioned. Does the newer version work with the T7 specifically without a firmware update?
  • Godox TT685II-C: This one is much cheaper and uses AA batteries which I do not mind but again the compatibility thing is stressing me out.

I am leaning towards the TT685II just to save money but I do not want to get it and then have it not fire when I am trying to take photos of the cake cutting or something. Has anyone actually used these specific Godox units with a T7 lately? Or should I just bite the bullet and get the official Canon one so I do not have to worry about it? I am mostly worried about the TTL working correctly because I am not fast enough at manual settings yet for a live event...

Checking in a day late but you definitely need to be careful with the T7 hot shoe. That missing center pin is a total pain. If you buy a flash that isnt specifically updated for the no-pin Canons, it just wont fire. Here is what I would suggest:

  • The Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon is your best bet under $200. The Mark II version handles the T7 pin issue out of the box, but make sure the seller confirms the firmware is current.
  • Avoid older version 1 units unless you can update them via USB yourself.
  • If you can spend a bit more, the Godox V860III-C Wireless Li-ion Flash is great because the battery lasts way longer than AAs.
  • Only buy the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT if you want absolute peace of mind. Order soon so you can test the TTL before the party... dont let the first time you use it be the cake cutting.

^ This. Also, you really gotta be careful with older stock or used listings because if the firmware isnt current, it just wont talk to that T7. Since you are on a tight deadline for the party, are you planning to mostly bounce the light off the ceiling or do you need a full diffuser setup? Also, how much of that 200 dollar budget needs to be left over for your tripod?
