Okay so I feel really stupid even asking this because I just got this camera and I thought it would just take good photos but the indoor ones are just... bad. I have the Canon 80D and whenever I use the little pop up flash the people look like ghosts and the background is pitch black and it just looks cheap. Someone told me I need an external flash but when I look online I am totally lost. I see stuff about speedlites and triggers and sync speeds and I have literally no idea what any of that means. I am honestly so stressed out because my sister asked me to take photos of her baby shower next month at this community center that has like zero windows and ugly yellow lights. I really dont want to ruin her photos but I only have maybe 80 or 100 dollars left after buying the camera. Is there anything at all that works for that price? I saw some brands like Godox and Neewer but there are a million models and I dont know which ones actually talk to my camera. Do I have to do all the math myself to get the light right or is there a flash that just knows what to do? I keep hearing about TTL but idk if thats a brand or a feature. I basically need:
- Something under $100
- Easy to use (like I just slide it on and it works?)
- Good for indoor parties and baby showers
- Works with the 80D specifically
I am really sorry if this is like a super basic thing I should know already I just feel like I am drowning in technical stuff and I just want the photos to not look like they were taken with a flip phone from 2005. I'm gonna be ordering from Amazon most likely since I live in a rural area with no camera shops nearby. Does anyone have a specific model they used when they were starting out? I am worried if I buy a cheap one it might blow up my camera or something crazy like that...

Like someone mentioned, you definitely want to look for that TTL feature because it makes everything so much easier! It basically acts like an auto mode for your light so you dont have to stress about the math during the baby shower. I was totally terrified of frying my 80D with a cheap flash when I first started, but the Yongnuo YN568EX III TTL Speedlite for Canon is a total lifesaver and super safe to use!! I love it because it feels way more expensive than it actually is. It is seriously fantastic for indoor shots when you have those ugly yellow lights. Heres my big tip for the party: point the flash head at the ceiling or a wall behind you! This is called bouncing and it is going to make the baby shower photos look soft and professional instead of that harsh ghost look you get with the pop-up flash. It is such a game changer!! Also, definitely grab some Panasonic Eneloop AA High Capacity Rechargeable Batteries because regular batteries will just die so fast and leave you hanging. You are going to do an amazing job with those photos, just take a deep breath and let the TTL do the hard work for you. Honestly, once you see the difference a bounce flash makes, you will never want to use that pop-up thing again lol!

Honestly, dont feel bad about asking. I went through the exact same thing when I first started out with my 80D. I ended up getting the Godox TT350C Mini TTL Speedlite for Canon and I have been extremely satisfied with how it performs for the price. It usually sits right around $85 which fits your budget perfectly. TTL stands for Through The Lens and it is basically a feature where the camera and flash communicate to set the exposure automatically. You literally just slide it into the hot shoe on top of your camera, turn it on, and it does the heavy lifting for you. No math required. I have used this specific model for dozens of indoor events and I have zero complaints about the light quality. The big secret for that baby shower is going to be bouncing the light. This flash head tilts and rotates, so instead of pointing it at the people, you point it at the ceiling. The light hits the ceiling and scatters, creating a soft glow that makes everyone look way better than that tiny pop-up flash ever could. Technically speaking, this unit has a guide number of 36 at ISO 100, which is plenty for a community center. It also supports high-speed sync up to 1/8000s if you ever take it outside. Its been a reliable workhorse for me and I am happy to say it wont blow up your camera haha. Just make sure you get some decent rechargeable batteries and you will be good to go.

Unfortunately, most high-end gear is way out of that price range. I have had issues with bottom-barrel brands where the flash just stops firing or the battery door snaps off. Its not as good as the pro stuff, but you can find safe options that wont blow your 80Ds circuits. You definitely want TTL (Through The Lens), which basically means the camera and flash talk to handle the light settings for you automatically. A couple of solid, safe choices:
- Yongnuo YN565EX III Flash Speedlite for Canon
- This is a reliable TTL unit that stays under $80. Much safer than random no-name brands.
- Neewer NW-670 TTL Flash Speedlite for Canon
- A decent entry-level option, tho the recycle time is slower than Id like. Just point the flash at the ceiling to bounce the light. It stops that ghost look and fills the whole room. Reach out if you get stuck with the camera menus, I can walk you through the flash sync settings if needed!
