Ive been shooting with my 5D Mark IV for years mostly for portraits but I finally booked a dream trip to Iceland for next month and I am so hyped! Realized my studio setup is way too heavy for hiking and I want to actually use the weather sealing properly. I usually just swap a couple LP-E6N batteries but I wont have easy outlet access for days and need to be smart about weight. I have about 500 bucks left for extras.

So far I have:

  • Peak Design clip
  • L-bracket
  • Spare cards

Besides the obvious glass what are the essential travel accessories for the 5D4 when youre out in the elements?

Even with weather sealing, I would suggest not trusting it 100%. Pick up a Peak Design Shell Camera Cover Large to be safe. Since you wont have outlets, you gotta be smart with power. Instead of buying more expensive Canon batteries, get a Nitecore UCN2 Pro Dual Slot USB Charger for Canon LP-E6N and a big power bank like the Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K. This combo lets you charge in your bag while you hike and saves a ton of money over buying five extra batteries. For the leftover cash, make sure to get a decent rocket blower like Giottos Rocket Air Blaster Large because the black sand there gets everywhere. Seriously, dont skip the rain protection or youll regret it.

Honestly, the 5D4 is a beast but that mirror mechanism eats power in the cold. I learned that the hard way when my batteries just quit unexpectedly during a long hike. You really gotta be careful about how you manage your power and stability out there.

Just catching up on this thread. Unfortunately, I had a disappointing experience during a similar trip because my equipment was not as good as expected tho.

  • Avoid low-cost rain sleeves that fail in heavy wind.
  • Dont use heavy steel tripod plates; the added weight is unnecessary.
  • Cheap cleaning fluids often cause streaks in humid environments. Prioritizing cost over quality really hindered my performance.
