So I finally pulled the trigger on the R5 Mark II but now I am stuck on the lighting situation. I have a wedding coming up in October for my cousin out in Seattle and the venue is basically a cave so I need something solid. I saw the EL-1 but 1000 for a flash is just insane right now. I read about the EL-5 being the native choice but some people say the new multi-function shoe is a bit finicky or needs specific adapters for the weather sealing to actually work? I just want something that wont overheat.

  • budget under 600 dollars
  • fast recycle times
  • reliable ttl

Should I stick with Canon or is Godox actually reliable enough for a pro body like this?

the Canon Speedlite EL-5 is definitely the sweet spot for the r5 ii right now since it fits the new shoe natively. you dont need that Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter unless you're trying to use older flashes like the 600ex-rt. it has a recycle time of 0.1 to 1.2 seconds which is plenty fast for a wedding. here are a couple options under that 600 dollar mark:

  • Canon Speedlite EL-5 for the best ttl reliability and native integration.
  • Godox V1Pro C Flash for Canon because it actually has a cooling fan for those cave-like venues. imo the godox v1pro is a beast for the price. it uses a li-ion battery so you wont be fumbling with AAs in the dark. the ttl is usually 95% there, tho native canon will always be slightly more consistent with exposure metering.
