Looking for tripod recommendations for the Canon EOS R1. I plan on using it mainly for landscape photography, but also some wildlife. Need something sturdy enough for long exposures. Budget is around $300. What are your favorite tripods in that price range?

Ok so it seems like everyone is torn between getting something new or going the used route for more stability. Honestly, I’m leaning towards the idea of prioritizing safety like someone mentioned, especially with a camera as nice as the R1. Since I’m still a bit of a beginner, I’ve been reading up on the DIY side of things (at least that’s what I’m trying to learn). Like, maybe instead of just focusing on the brand, it’s worth checking if you can easily service the tripod yourself? I’m a bit nervous about taking things apart, but I wonder if being able to tighten the bolts or clean the legs yourself makes a cheaper or used one feel way more secure? It seems like a good way to save money while keeping your gear safe. Just a thought tho.

To add to the point above: im also stuck in this same boat and honestly its pretty frustrating. finding a setup for the R1 that doesnt wobble during long exposures but stays under $300 is basically impossible. i had issues with the Slik Pro CF-734 after using it for a year. it was light but the twist locks got gritty and the leg joints started feeling loose, which is not what you want with an expensive body. then i tried the Benro Mach3 9X CF Series 2 TMA28C but it was just too heavy for the hikes i do. it was stable enough i guess, but the build quality on the leg latches felt cheap after a few months of heavy use. TL;DR:

  • Slik: great weight but the durability is just not there long-term.
  • Benro: fairly solid but way too bulky and annoying to carry around. unfortunately it feels like in this price bracket we are just choosing between different types of disappointment... still looking for a real solution tho.

Exactly what I was thinking

Hey! I've had a Manfrotto BeFree Advanced for 3 years, and it's been amazing! Super sturdy for landscapes. Think it was around $250? Definitely worth a look!

Forget the usual suspects. Check out carbon fiber travel tripods; lighter and surprisingly rigid. My Leofoto Ranger LS-224C handles a heavy DSLR easily, and packs small. Around $250. Worth a look!

Honestly, skip the carbon fiber hype in that range. I had issues with cheap ones. Consider a used Manfrotto aluminum tripod; rock solid and saves you cash. Check eBay; you might find a 055 for around $150.

Heard mixed things about cheaper tripods. For camera safety, consider saving a bit more. Used Manfrotto in the past, solid, but maybe look at used higher-end models? Better safe than sorry!
