Planning a big Europe trip next month and need advice on the best travel lens for my R5 Mark II. I want something versatile that can handle everything from architecture to street photography without constantly swapping lenses. Currently considering the RF 24-105mm f/4L or maybe the RF 24-240mm for extra reach. Image quality is important but so is keeping my kit lightweight since I'll be walking around cities all day. What's your go-to travel setup? Any other focal ranges I should consider? Would love to hear your real-world experiences!
For travel, I actually prefer a lightweight prime setup. I've found my go-to lightweight travel setup to be the Canon R5 paired with the RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM lens. While the Leica Q2 has a nice 28mm focal length, I've found that I prefer the versatility of a 35mm lens. The RF 35/1.8 Macro gives me that classic "normal" field of view. Lightweight at just over 300g, it's compact in design - it's small, light and nimble, and is still a great performer. You can always supplement it with the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for portraits.
Honestly, after years of doing international trips, I’ve become pretty cautious about gear reliability. When you’re on a big trip, the last thing you want is a lens failure or moisture getting inside your expensive Canon EOS R5 Mark II. I used to carry non-L lenses to save weight, but one rainy day in Prague basically ruined a whole afternoon of shooting because I was worried about my kit getting soaked. I’ve found that for peace of mind, sticking to weather-sealed glass is the way to go, especially since you're walking around all day. Here’s my reliability-first setup: * Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM - This is my go-to. It's built like a tank compared to the 24-240mm. The weather sealing is top-notch, and I’ve never had it fail on me in dusty or damp conditions.
* A high-quality UV protection filter - Tbh, it's cheap insurance against scratches in crowded tourist spots.
* Don't forget a sturdy strap like the Peak Design Slide - European cobblestones can be rough if you drop your gear. I think the 24-105mm hits the sweet spot for safety and quality. Better to be safe than sorry when you're thousands of miles from home lol.
I'd highly recommend the RF 24-240mm - it's amazing and better than much more expensive lenses. The only downsides are no weatherproofing and it's a bit slow, but since the R5 Mark II has great IBIS and does so well in low light, you sometimes don't notice. It's really the best hiking lens I've ever used, everything from fairly close wildlife to insects and wide angle, without much weight.
just saw this thread. honestly im pretty satisfied with how my gear is working out but you should really just check out youtube for this. theres a solid video that compares all those RF zooms on the Canon EOS R5 Mark II and shows the actual raw crops so you can see the IQ for yourself. i always prefer doing my own research that way anyway. just search for R5 Mark II travel lens comparison and its basically the first result tho... TL;DR: Search YouTube for comparisons, seeing the actual image samples for yourself is way more useful than forum talk.
Same setup here, love it
Did this last week, worked perfectly
