I'm planning a trip and looking for recommendations on the best Canon RF lenses for travel photography. I want a versatile setup that covers various situations, from landscapes to street photography. What are the top RF lenses you would suggest for a lightweight travel kit? Any specific models that excel in image quality and portability? Thanks in advance for your help!

Here are a few recommendations:

  1. Canon RF 28-70mm F/2.8 IS STM: This is a versatile zoom lens that covers a great range for landscapes and portraits, making it ideal for travel photography. It's lightweight and budget-friendly.

  2. Canon RF 35mm F/1.8 IS STM: A compact prime lens that excels in low light and offers beautiful bokeh. It's perfect for street photography and portraits while traveling, also under $500.

  3. Canon RF 16-28mm F/2.8 IS STM: If you're into landscapes, this ultra-wide lens is fantastic for capturing expansive views. It’s sharp and performs well in various conditions.

  4. Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM: For wildlife enthusiasts, this telephoto lens is lightweight and offers great reach with a budget price.

  5. Canon RF-S 18-150mm: If you’re using an APS-C camera like the R10, this lens is an excellent all-rounder for travel, covering wide-angle to medium telephoto.

Honestly, I had a pretty rough time with the lightweight gear everyone usually recommends. I picked up the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM thinking it would be the perfect all-rounder, but it was just so disappointing in anything but bright direct sun. Then I grabbed the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for night shots, but it kept hunting for focus on my Canon EOS RP body, which was super frustrating and made me miss a bunch of candid shots.

  • 24-105mm STM: Light, sure, but image quality felt muddy compared to what I expected for the price.
  • 50mm STM: Cheap and tiny, but that autofocus noise is actually kinda loud when you are trying to be discrete in quiet streets. It reminds me of when I went to that tiny village in Italy and my walking shoes literally fell apart on the first day. I spent more time looking for a cobbler than actually taking photos of the architecture. Found a guy who fixed them with some weird industrial glue that smelled like lemons for a week... at least the shoes survived the trip. Anyway, those lenses just werent as good as I hoped theyd be.
