I’m struggling to nail focus on my R5 with the small built-in screen. Since Canon RF cameras can be picky with HDMI lag, I need a reliable 5-7 inch monitor that’s bright enough for outdoor shoots. Do you prefer the Atomos Ninja or something more budget-friendly like Feelworld? What’s the most seamless setup you’ve found?

Ok so, i've been using Canon gear for like over a decade now, but honestly i'm still kinda new to the whole external monitor game!! It is totally a game changer because that tiny screen on the R5 is so hard to see when you're shooting outdoors in the sun. Basically, why it matters is that a bigger screen lets you see if your focus is actually sharp or if it's just 'close enough,' which literally saves so much time in editing later on. I mean, missing focus is the worst feeling ever lol. Here is what i've found with my R5 setup: * Atomos Ninja V 5-inch 4K HDMI Recording Monitor: This is basically the gold standard, i mean everyone loves it for a reason!! It's super bright (1000 nits) so you can actually see what you're doing in the sun. The best part is the build quality feels SO solid. But yeah, it is kinda pricey and you gotta buy SSDs for it if you wanna record externally.
* Feelworld F6 Plus 5.5 Inch 3D LUT Touchscreen Monitor: This is much more budget-friendly and honestly?? It’s surprisingly good for the price! It’s really light, which is great if you don't wanna carry a heavy rig all day. But, the brightness isn't quite as AMAZING as the Ninja, so you'll probably need a sunshade for outdoor shoots. I think the HDMI lag is mostly okay on both if you use a high-quality cable like the Atomos Coiled Full HDMI to Micro HDMI Cable. Seriously, dont cheap out on the cable or you'll get those annoying flicker issues. I'm still learning but I lowkey love the Feelworld for casual stuff cuz it’s so light! Anyway, hope that helps gl!!

Hmm, I've had a different experience with the Atomos workflow on the R5. Honestly, after using Canon setups for over 15 years, I find the UI on those recorders a bit clunky if you're just monitoring for focus. Since the R5 already records incredible internal 10-bit, you're basically paying for a recorder you dont really need. Respectfully, I'd consider another option like the SmallHD Indie 7 7-inch Smart Monitor. I've unfortunately had issues with HDMI handshake lag on budget brands, and SmallHD's PageOS is just miles ahead for focus peaking. If you want something smaller, the SmallHD Focus 5-inch On-Camera Monitor is a solid pick too. Also, the build quality on the Portkeys BM5 III 5.5-inch 2200nit High Bright Monitor is actually insane for outdoor work cuz it's so bright!! Seriously, focus on the software tools rather than just recording capability. gl!

Tbh I totally agree with the point that if youre shooting R5 internal, you really dont need to pay the extra tax for a recorder. But looking at the market trends lately, there’s a really interesting "prosumer" tier that hasn't been mentioned yet and basically it’s all about camera control integration. I’ve been doing some deep dives into the specs and the Portkeys LH7H and the Portkeys BM5 III WR are kind of the dark horse candidates for RF users right now because: * Wireless Control: Some of these can actually trigger recording or even tweak settings via Bluetooth/WiFi which is huge if youre on a gimbal and cant reach the R5 dial!!
* Brightness: You really need at least 1500-2000 nits for outdoor shoots and these hit those specs without being as pricey as the high-end SmallHD units.
* Hardware: They use more alloy in the frames compared to the flimsy plastic on the super budget stuff iirc. Wait actually... I think the HDMI handshake lag people talk about is often just a cable quality issue or an HDMI 1.4 vs 2.0 mismatch?? Either way, if you want something that feels more integrated with the Canon ecosystem without the recorder bulk, these mid-tier options are definitely worth a look imo.

TL;DR from this thread: we’re basically split between "monitors are essential" and "recorders are overkill." Honestly, after shooting for years, I think the biggest thing to understand is that these monitors are realy about confidence. If you can't see the focus plane on that tiny R5 screen, you're just guessing, and that's a risky game to play when you're shooting high-res video! Missing focus on such a beautiful camera is actually the absolute worst feeling. So basically the consensus is that if you already love the internal R5 footage, you dont need to pay the extra tax for a recorder. My advice? Go with Portkeys if you want something solid but sleek, or honestly just grab any high-bright model from Feelworld. You'll save a ton of money and still get that big, bright image you need for outdoor shoots. Just make sure it’s a high-nit version so you aren't fighting the sun all day lol. It totally transforms the shooting experience!! gl!
