Does anyone have a solid recommendation for a battery grip or a cage setup for the Canon R7 specifically for long video shoots? I've been doing a ton of digging and I'm honestly torn between just getting a cage or trying one of those third-party battery grips since Canon decided not to make an official one for this body for some reason.
I saw the SmallRig Black Mamba cage is popular but I'm worried it wont actually help with the battery life issues I'm having. I'm shooting a wedding in Chicago next month and I'm really nervous about the R7's battery life when shooting 4K 60fps all day. I read that some people use the Neewer or BG-R10 clones but then I see other reviews saying the communication with the camera is buggy and it shows non-genuine battery errors which would be a nightmare mid-ceremony. My hands are also kinda big so the R7 feels a bit tiny when I have a heavy lens on it.
Is it better to just get a cage and mount a power bank or a small v-mount to the back or is there a grip that actually works well? I'm just trying to avoid a messy setup with cables everywhere if I can help it...
I honestly wasted money on the Neewer BG-R10 Replacement Battery Grip and it was a total letdown... kept losing connection mid-shoot. Unfortunately, those third-party grips just arent reliable for weddings. The SmallRig Black Mamba Cage for Canon EOS R7 is better for handling big lenses and doesnt block the screen, but it doesnt solve power. I eventually just rigged a power bank to the cage because those grips are just too buggy.
Like someone mentioned, grips arent reliable. The cage adds the bulk you need. Try this:
Are you shooting 10-bit? Fried a port using cheap cables once, so be careful.
Been dealing with the exact same frustration lately. Its honestly such a letdown that Canon ignored the pro-sumer segment by skipping a first-party grip for the R7. I tried a few knockoffs and they were junk... connection drops are just not worth the risk during a ceremony. Since you need that extra height for your hands and reliable power, I finally settled on a rig that doesnt feel like a science project.
