Good Microphone for Canon EOS R8?

Recently upgraded to the Canon EOS R8 for YouTube videos and need microphone recommendations. I'm mostly filming indoors but occasionally outdoors. Budget is around $200. Already have the camera cage.

Which mics work well with the R8? Rode VideoMic Pro+? DJI Mic? Something else? I'm concerned about audio quality, battery life, and ease of use. Not interested in lavaliers at this point.

Would love to hear from actual R8 users about what's working for you!

Ok so, I have to push back a little on the idea that better preamps make the gear choice less critical. Honestly, even with the R8's improved signal-to-noise ratio, you’re still fighting the physical limitations of a 3.5mm TRS input. It’s inherently unbalanced, and if you’re filming outdoors or in signal-dense areas, that’s where things usually fall apart regardless of how clean the camera gain is. If you're prioritizing reliability, here are the technical pitfalls I see people overlook:
- **EMI/RFI Interference:** Unbalanced cables basically act like antennas for radio interference. In urban environments, this can introduce a hum that no amount of post-processing will fix.
- **Connector Fatigue:** The 3.5mm jack is a major point of failure under stress. Without a proper cable relief or a locking mechanism, you risk intermittent signal loss mid-recording.
- **Power Management:** Relying on internal lithium cells that can't be swapped mid-shoot is a massive risk. Always look for options with a fail-safe or standardized battery backup. Basically, don't just look at the frequency response in a vacuum. You need to consider the failure points of the entire signal chain. Technical reliability in the field is way more important than just having 'clean' audio when you're testing at your desk.

Exactly what I was thinking

I've been using the Rode VideoMic Pro+ with my R8 and couldn't be happier. The sound quality is excellent, and it has great features like automatic power on/off when connected to the camera. The built-in battery lasts forever, and the shock mount does a good job minimizing handling noise. It's not the cheapest option (~$300), but definitely worth it if sound quality is important to you.

So I've been wrestling with the same budget constraints since I picked up my R8. Tbh, I was realy worried about overspending on audio because the camera itself wasn't cheap. I think I read somewhere—maybe on a gear blog?—that the R8's internal preamps are actualy way better than the old RP, which makes it easier to use mid-range gear without getting that annoying hiss. Not sure if that's technically 100% true, but it's what I've heard. My journey was basically trying to find that sweet spot where I didn't need a separate battery for the mic because it’s such a pain to manage. IIRC, some of the newer bus-powered options are getting really good. Also, definitely keep an eye on how the mic cord messes with the flip-out screen. On my setup, it always seems to get in the way of the view, which is wierdly frustrating when filming solo. Just something to think about regarding the physical layout versus just the audio specs. Finding something that doesn't require a constant battery check has been a lifesaver for me personally.
