Heading to Japan next month and need to pack light. I read that a Peak Design capture clip is a must, but then others say it hurts your shoulder after a while. My budget is only like $80 anyway. What are the actual bare essentials for a T7 beginner?

I actually bought the Peak Design clip for a trip last year and unfortunately had issues with it digging into my collarbone after just a few hours. It is not as good as expected if youre walking all day, plus it eats up your whole budget. For Japan, you want to keep things cheap and comfortable. Instead of the clip, I ended up testing a couple of cheaper alternatives that actually worked way better for my Rebel T7.

  • Peak Design Leash Camera Strap is super low profile and lets you slide the camera to your hip. Unfortunately, the padding is basically nonexistent, but it packs down to nothing and fits the budget.
  • Altura Photo Rapid Fire Camera Strap is a cross-body option that screws into the tripod mount. The shoulder pad is great, though it hangs a bit loose when you bend over.
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB SDXC UHS-I card. Seriously, dont forget extra storage because Japanese temples and streets will have you shooting non-stop, and running out of space mid-day is the worst. Honestly, just grab a decent cross-body strap and a solid memory card and youre set. You really dont need to overcomplicate it or blow all your cash on hyped up clips.

Regarding what #1 said about the clip digging in, yeah, that T7 isnt super heavy but a full day of walking through Kyoto will definitely make you feel it. Since youre on a budget, honestly, just skip the fancy clips and focus on power and storage. The T7 is a bit of a battery hog if youre using the screen a lot to review photos of temples or using live view. Grab a BM Premium 2-Pack LP-E10 Batteries and Dual USB Charger. Its way cheaper than Canon brand ones and lets you charge via a power bank while youre on the train. Also, dont forget a fast card like the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I. Japan is beautiful and youll end up shooting way more than you think. Finally, a LensPen NLP-1 Original Lens Cleaner is a lifesaver for rain spots or fingerprints. It fits in your pocket and costs basically nothing, which keeps you well under that $80 limit.

Like someone mentioned, staying under budget is a total nightmare. im having the exact same issue with my next trip too. last time i tried to be practical about costs, i ended up spending way too much at this incredible stationery shop in Ginza. i spent like two hours just testing pens and ended up with a massive bag of paper i didnt need. i was so happy with the haul tho. anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there
