Looking for recommendations on the fastest, most reliable SD cards for my new Canon EOS R7. I'll be shooting 4K video and RAW burst photography. Currently considering the ProGrade Digital Cobalt, SanDisk Extreme PRO, and Sony TOUGH series cards. Which offers the best balance of speed, reliability, and value? Any real-world experience with these in the R7? Budget is around $100-150 per card.

I've been using the SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB UHS-II cards with my R7 for about 8 months now. They easily handle the camera's burst mode and 4K video without buffer issues. Pricier than some options, but worth it if you shoot action or wildlife where those buffer speeds matter.

Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.

@Reply #5 - good point! honestly rethinking the storage strategy is probably the smartest move you can make right now. i remember when i first started with my R7, i almost lost a whole day of birding shots because i was being cheap with my cards and didnt realize how fast that buffer fills up. i ended up doing a bunch of diy tests at home just to see where the bottleneck was... super frustrating but it really taught me a lot. before you pull the trigger on anything, i would suggest being really cautious and asking yourself a couple things:

  • are you planning to write to both slots at the same time for redundancy or just using the second for overflow?
  • how long do you actually hold that shutter down during a typical burst? i ask because the r7 can be kinda picky if the cards arent matched perfectly for dual-slot recording. just make sure to think about your workflow because it can save you a ton of money in the long run. let me know if you need any more help figuring out the dual slot logic!

The Canon R7 needs fast cards to maximize its capabilities. I'd recommend any V60 or V90 rated UHS-II card. Personally, I use the Sony TOUGH series and they're excellent - durable build with no write protection switch to break. Not the cheapest option though.
