So I was thinking about the Peak Design carbon but its way over my $300 budget. Then my logic was Manfrotto 055 but it looks so heavy for hiking Iceland next month. My 6D and 24-105 combo is a tank so I need stability but everything seems either flimsy or 5 pounds. What actually works?

That wind is no joke near the Vik beaches and you need something that wont vibrate like a tuning fork. If you want that carbon fiber vibration damping without paying the crazy Peak Design tax, you seriously gotta look at the Leofoto LS-284C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod. It is an absolute beast for the price. It weighs only about 2.6 lbs but has a load capacity of nearly 22 lbs which is plenty for that bulky 6D and 24-105 combo. I used this exact setup for some long exposures and it held up amazing even in high gusts. The top leg sections are 28mm... thats basically the sweet spot for stability vs weight tbh. Another fantastic option if you can find it on sale is the Benro Mach3 TMA28C Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod. It is super rugged and handles the sand and grit better than most travel legs. Just pair it with something like the Leofoto LH-30 Low Profile Ball Head and you are golden. Honestly, dont bother with the heavy aluminum Manfrotto stuff for hiking, your back will hate you after two days! Let me know if you want the specific torque ratings for the leg locks or more data, I have those specs handy...

Just saw this and I'm agreeing with the point about the wind—it's brutal. Over the years I've realized that a center column is basically a sail. It just vibrates too much.

  • Grab the Sirui AM-284 Carbon Fiber Tripod since it's rock solid and stays under budget.
  • Don't extend the thinnest leg sections when it's gusty.
  • Hang your pack from the apex for extra weight.

TLDR: Need more data. What is your absolute maximum weight tolerance for the legs, and are you prioritizing folded length or max height for those Iceland vistas?
