So I just bought a Canon R7 for my cousins wedding next month in Chicago and I'm super stressed. I tried shooting some test video in my backyard but the little screen on the back is so tiny I cant even tell if things are in focus or not. I keep seeing people on youtube with these big screens on top of their cameras but I have no idea where to even start looking.

Are they just called monitors? I dont want to buy the wrong thing and blow my $300 budget on something that wont even plug into my camera. Sorry if this is a really basic question but do I need special cables or a certain brand to work with the Canon RF system or does any screen work...

Yeah they are just called field monitors and they definitely help. Buying gear is stressful but my setup works well and Im very satisfied with it. Its been super reliable which is huge for a wedding. Two quick tips for your R7:

Building on the earlier suggestion, basic screens are unfortunately useless in daylight. I had issues with glare, so grab the Desview R6 UHB 5.5 Inch 2800nit Monitor because dim displays just wont cut it.

To add to the point above, it really comes down to not overspending on the screen so you have cash left for the boring stuff that actually keeps it running. Charlie mentioned signal loss and that usually happens because of cheap cables, not just the monitor itself.

  • Look at the Portkeys PT6 5.2 Inch 4K HDMI Monitor. Its usually way under $200 which leaves you room in your budget for batteries and a mount.
  • Reliability hack: Spend a bit more on a Kondor Blue Braided Micro HDMI to HDMI Cable. Most signal drops happen because the micro HDMI port on the R7 is super tiny and cheap cables wiggle loose easily.
  • For power, grab a Neewer NP-F550 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery 2-Pack. They are small and light so your camera rig doesnt feel like a total brick during a long ceremony. The Portkeys is great because it has a UI overlay feature which means you can see your camera settings without the monitor icons covering the actual image. Super helpful when you're stressed at a wedding and need to see everything clearly... honestly that tiny R7 screen is a nightmare for manual focus lol.

Unfortunately, I think some budget screens are just not as good as expected. Not sure, but I heard they can randomly lose signal during long ceremonies, which is kinda risky.
