honestly im about to pull my hair out with this setup. i finally upgraded to the canon r6 mark ii a few months ago and i love the camera itself but my old godox flash is just... not doing it anymore. it keeps losing connection or the ttl is completely blowing out the highlights and then missing the next three shots because it wont recycle fast enough. i have my sisters engagement party in chicago in literally two weeks and im panicking because i cannot have the flash failing me when everyone is dancing. i tried looking at the official canon el-1 but my god the price tag is insane i just cant justify spending over a thousand bucks right now. budget is more in the $300 to $500 range if possible. i just need something that actually talks to the rf mount properly without me having to fiddle with settings every five seconds. i feel like im missing every single candid moment because of this thing.

the main things i need are:

  • fast recycle time
  • consistent ttl that doesnt freak out
  • wont overheat during a long reception

is it better to stick with the newer canon branded ones like the el-5 or are there third party ones that actually work consistently with mirrorless? i just want something reliable that doesnt suck...

Native reliability is the clear consensus for proper RF shoe communication.

The RF mount multi-function shoe uses a very specific timing protocol for TTL data, and in my experience, third-party reverse-engineering just isnt there yet. I have seen way too many dropped packets during high-speed bursts when things get hot.

  • Stick with the Canon brand for better circuit protection
  • Look for their lithium-ion powered units Basically, go with any modern Canon Speedlite and you wont have to worry about those communication errors anymore.
