Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with my Canon R6 for a while now, and while I love the performance, I’m really starting to miss the vertical handling I had on my old DSLRs. My hands feel a bit cramped during long portrait sessions, and the extra battery life would be a lifesaver for wedding days. I’m torn between biting the bullet on the official Canon BG-R10 or trying out one of the cheaper third-party alternatives like Neewer or Vello. I’m mostly concerned about weather sealing and whether the shutter button feels as responsive as the original. Does anyone have experience with third-party grips on the RF system, or is the OEM version the only way to go for reliable performance?
In my experience, I have tried both and there is definitely a noticeable difference in how they feel during a long day. Honestly, i went through this exact same thing with my R6 cuz those portrait sessions really cramp your hands up. - Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip: The build quality is basically perfect. The buttons have that exact same tactile feel as the camera body, and the weather sealing has saved me during a few rainy wedding ceremonies. It just feels solid, you know?
- Vello BG-C18 Battery Grip for Canon EOS R5, R5 C, R6, and R6 II: It is way cheaper and gets the job done for extra battery life, but the dials feel a bit "crunchy" and the plastic feels thinner. I guess it depends on your needs, but for pro work, the official Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip is the only one I really trust. You dont wanna deal with a wierd connection error mid-shoot, right? gl!
Seconding the recommendation above because if ur doing weddings, the weather sealing on the Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip is honestly the main reason to pay more. I've found third-party options like the Vello BG-C18 Battery Grip for Canon EOS R5, R5 C, R6, and R6 Mark II often have a mushy shutter button feel compared to the crisp OEM click. Stick to the original for reliability! gl
Can confirm
I’m gonna have to play devil’s advocate here because I’ve spent a lot of time looking into the market data on these clones lately. I get the "OEM or bust" mentality - especially for weddings - but the price gap is getting pretty hard to ignore if you actually look at the hardware. While everyone loves the Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip, you’re basically paying a 300% markup. I’ve been testing the Neewer Vertical Battery Grip for Canon EOS R5 R5 C R6 R6 II as a secondary option and honestly? The gap in build quality has narrowed a lot compared to the old DSLR days. From a market research perspective, many of these third-party factories are using the same logic boards now - so the communication with the R6 battery info is actually quite reliable. Sure, the shutter might feel a tiny bit different, and maybe I wouldn't take it out in a literal monsoon without a rain cover, but for $80-90 vs $350? You could buy a backup and still have enough left for a prime lens. If you’re cautious like me, maybe grab the Neewer for your second body first to see if you can live with it? Just a thought before dropping that much cash on a plastic tray.
Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.
