so i bought this canon r10 because everyone said it was a great starter camera for travel but honestly im about five minutes away from just returning the whole thing and using my iphone. i have this trip to italy coming up in exactly three weeks and im panicking because the lens that came in the box—the 18-45mm one—just feels like it doesnt do anything well. i tried taking some practice shots at a local park and i couldnt zoom in on a bird more than a few feet away and then when the sun started going down every single photo came out blurry and gross.

i have no idea what im doing and all these youtube guys use words like chromatic aberration and focal reach and i just want to take nice pictures of the colosseum and maybe some pasta. i dont want to be that person swapping lenses every five minutes on a dusty street corner while my wife gets annoyed with me. is there like one lens that just does everything? i saw something about an 18-150mm lens that sounds like it zooms more but will it be better in the dark? or do i need those ones that dont zoom at all? somebody told me those are better for vibes but i dont want to have to walk back and forth a mile just to fit a building in the frame.

my budget is like 500 or 600 bucks tops because i already blew the rest of the savings on the actual camera. i just need something reliable for a 14 day trip through rome and florence. sorry if this is a really stupid question but i am literally drowning in tabs on my browser right now and i just need someone to tell me what to buy so i can stop stressing out. do i get the big zoom one or is there something else i havent seen yet?

Politely disagreeing here. Over the years, Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM has proven the most reliable travel choice.

  • Bump the ISO
  • Lean on walls Honestly, simplicity's always safer.

Had the exact same issue when I took my R10 to Spain last year. I bought the Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM refurbished to save cash, but honestly, it disappointed me when the sun went down.

  • The f/6.3 aperture at the tele end was way too slow.
  • ISO climbed to 6400, adding tons of noise. Grabbing a cheap used Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for night shots saved my budget.
