honestly im about to lose my mind with this camera. i bought the canon r10 because everyone said it was great for starters but the sound is just... awful. it picks up every single click of the lens and my breathing but then my voice sounds like im under water or something. i tried watching some videos on youtube but they all talk about preamps and xlr cables and phantom power and i have literally no idea what any of that means. i just want to plug something in and have it work. sorry if this is a really basic thing to ask but i feel so stupid right now. i need something for when im filming my cats and doing some talking to the camera stuff in my living room here in london. i dont want something huge that needs its own battery because i know for a fact ill forget to charge it or turn it off and itll be dead when i need it.

here is what i need:

  • under 120 pounds if possible
  • literally just plug it in and it works
  • small enough to stay on the camera
  • no extra batteries to worry about

im looking at those fuzzy ones but there are like a million of them on amazon and the prices are all over the place. is there one that actually works with the r10 without needing a bunch of adapters? i just want to start filming my vlog next week and the audio is holding me back so much right now...

Just found this. Honestly, Ive had issues with generic fuzzy mics from Amazon—they often sound tinny and cheap. Quick question: is your living room quite echoey? Compare these:

Honestly, you dont need to spend a fortune to fix that muddy sound. The R10 preamps are actually decent, they just need a signal that isnt coming from inside the plastic camera body. Since you hate batteries, you need mics that run on 3-5V plug-in power from the camera mic jack.

Its super compact and the shock mount is built right inside the housing so it wont snap off. It has a frequency response of 40Hz to 20kHz which captures that low-end cat purring perfectly!
  • Deity V-Mic D4 Mini Shotgun Microphone is a total budget beast. It only weighs 28 grams so you wont even feel it on your R10. It also has a really high signal-to-noise ratio for the price point. Love it!
  • Rode VideoMicro II Ultra-compact On-camera Microphone is a fantastic upgrade. It uses a supercardioid pattern with a 75Hz to 20kHz range to really focus on your voice and ignore those London street noises. Check out some comparison charts on the RTINGS website or look up Curtis Judd on YouTube if you want to hear the technical difference in noise floors. He does deep dives into the specs that really show why these beat the built-in R10 mics. Youll save a ton of money going with the Deity and still get pro-level sound for those vlogs. Seriously, dont let the audio frustrate you, its a quick fix!

I had that exact underwater sound issue in my flat. I bought the Rode VideoMic GO II Lightweight Shotgun and it works fine.

  • no batteries
  • easy setup Decent for cat vlogs.
