I finally pulled the trigger on a used EOS 6D Mark II and I am literally vibrating with excitement to get it out under some dark skies!! I’ve been stuck with an old Rebel for years so this feels like a massive upgrade for my astro stuff. Im planning a trip up to Yosemite next Friday for some Milky Way shots so I really need to grab a remote shutter release fast like within the next few days.
I’ve been looking at a few options:
The wired one looks super reliable but then I saw the Pixel wireless timer on Amazon for like half the price and it has all these extra intervalometer features which would be awesome for star trails and long exposures. But then I also heard the Bluetooth BR-E1 is really tiny and easy to carry around and it doesnt have wires to tangle up in the dark. My budget is pretty tight after buying the body so I want to stay under $60 if I can.
Im really torn between the reliability of the wired Canon one versus the extra features of the Pixel wireless. Has anyone used the Pixel one with the 6Dii specifically or does the connection drop out too much? Is it better to just stick with the official Canon gear so I dont ruin my trip...
> Im really torn between the reliability of the wired Canon one versus the extra features of the Pixel wireless. Just catching up on this thread! Since youre on a tight budget, did you know the 6D Mark II actually has a built-in intervalometer? You can set up your star trails right in the camera menu... its basically a lifesaver. I use it all the time for my astro stuff because its one less thing to lose in the dirt at night. If you really need a physical remote for those crazy long bulb exposures, definitely check out the Vello ShutterBoss II Wired Timer Remote for Canon 3-Pin. I took mine up to the Sierras last year and it handled the freezing cold like a champ. Its way more reliable than those Pixel wireless units. Another solid budget choice is the Neewer LCD Timer Shutter Release Remote Control N3 which is super cheap but gets the job done. Seriously, skip the bluetooth stuff for Yosemite and stick to a solid wired connection or the built-in timer!
Unfortunately, Canon BR-E1 Bluetooth Remote lacks an intervalometer. I found Pixel TW-283 Wireless Timer build quality disappointing.
^ This. Also, you really gotta be careful with those cheap wireless units when you are out in a place like Yosemite. I spent a week in the Sierras a few years back and my wireless trigger basically died the first night because the cold just ate the batteries. It is a total buzzkill when you are standing in the dark and your gear fails. If you want reliability but need more than just the basic button, I would suggest looking at these:
Regarding #2's point, internal timers work.
