I've been shooting with my 90D for about 18 months now and it's been a beast for everything from sports to portraits but I just signed on to help a friend with their wedding next Saturday and I'm freaking out a bit because my old flash just isn't cutting it. I was testing out my old Yongnuo unit and for some reason it's just not communicating right with the body in E-TTL mode anymore—it keeps overexposing everything or just failing to fire when I'm shooting at higher speeds. I know the 90D has that fast burst rate and I need something that can actually keep up without taking ten seconds to recycle between shots.
I've mostly done natural light work lately so I'm a bit out of the loop on the latest gear. I have a budget of about $350 maybe 400 if it's really worth it and I need to order something like yesterday so it gets here in time for the rehearsal. I'm based in the US so I'm looking at B&H or Amazon mostly for quick shipping.
Should I just stick with a Canon brand Speedlite like the 430EX III-RT or is the Godox V1 actually as good as everyone says for the 90D specifically? I've heard some third party flashes have issues with the AF assist beam on newer Canon bodies and I dont want to be hunting for focus in a dark reception hall. Which one is actually the most reliable for this specific camera?
^ This. Also, I'm satisfied with the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon. It works well on the 90D and is very cost-effective tho.
Oh man, I totally feel your pain with the Yongnuo failing right before a big gig!! I used to swear by those cheap units but they always seemed to flake out during receptions for me too... literally the worst timing ever. Honestly, if you have a wedding coming up next Saturday, you absolutely gotta go with the Godox V1-C Round Head Flash for Canon. I switched to this for my event work a while back and the lithium-ion battery is basically life changing because you arent fumbling with dozens of AA batteries in your pockets all night lol.
