So I finally upgraded to the 90D for my Costa Rica trip next month and I am super hyped to get out there and shoot some quetzals. Ive been a Canon guy forever but this is my first time needing a real battery grip for the long days in the field. I was looking at the official BG-E14 but man it is pricey for what it is. My logic was just to grab a Neewer or Vello one since theyre way cheaper but then I started worrying about the weather sealing and if it will actually talk to the camera right. Does anyone have experience with the third party ones on the 90D specifically? Is the official one worth the extra $100 or am I just paying for the logo...
ngl, unless you are planning to dunk the thing in a river, the official Canon one is total overkill for the price. I have been using the Vello BG-C9 Battery Grip for Canon 70D/80D/90D for like two years and it works just fine. The build quality isnt quite as tank-like as the Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip for EOS 70D/80D/90D, but for the price difference? You could buy two and still have money left for a few Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery packs. The buttons feel a bit clickier than the camera body buttons, which is kinda weird at first, but it talks to the 90D perfectly. I took mine through some humid spots and it held up tho. Save that extra $100 for a better lens or some extra SD cards...
Regarding what #1 said about dunking it, i actually used the Neewer Vertical Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D for a wedding last summer. It isnt as heavy as the official one but it worked fine.
@Reply #3 - good point! I agree with the others that the cost of new Canon accessories is high, but I would suggest being very cautious about the humidity you'll face in Costa Rica. Moisture can often cause issues with the electronic pins on cheaper third-party gear. Instead of buying a brand new budget model, you might want to consider purchasing a used Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip for EOS 70D 80D 90D from a dedicated camera reseller. It provides the weather sealing you need for a fraction of the retail price. If you really want a new budget unit, the Vivitar Battery Grip for Canon EOS 70D 80D 90D is another alternative to look at. Just make sure to keep it dry and check the battery tray fitment before you leave. Be careful because if the grip loses connection in the middle of a shoot, it can sometimes lock up the body. Honestly, reliability in the field is worth the extra research to find a deal on the official version.
Just saw this and wanted to chime in... I've spent years hauling my gear through rainforests and humid swamps. To add to the point above: the official sealing is technically superior but in my experience, real-world failure is rare if you are even a little bit careful. I ran a Meike MK-70D Professional Battery Grip on my 80D (same fit as your 90D) for three weeks in the Amazon and it held up against 90 percent humidity every day. Here is the technical reality of what you lose when going cheap:
