I finally got my 5D Mark IV and I am so stoked to start using it! I was looking at battery grips because I have a wedding to shoot for my cousin in two weeks and I'm terrified the battery will die mid-vows. I was thinking I should just get the Canon BG-E20 but man it is pricey. My logic was that official is better but then I saw some off-brand ones for way cheaper on Amazon and now I'm just lost. Do the cheap ones actually work or will it like... fry my camera? Sorry if this is a total noob question I just really dont want to mess up this expensive camera...

Just caught this thread. Tbh the Neewer NW-5D Mark IV Battery Grip with 2.4G Remote is a total steal if youre on a budget. It wont fry anything, dont worry.

  • Fits two Canon LP-E6N 1865mAh Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery packs
  • Standard 1/4 inch tripod thread
  • Nearly identical button layout The build is plastic compared to the mag alloy on the Canon, but for weddings it holds up. Just check the battery door latch is tight before you start... it basically gets the job done.

I’ve been using the Vello BG-C14 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark IV for a while and honestly, I'm super satisfied. It works well and the build quality feels really solid. No complaints with the shutter response or dial resistance. It definitely wont fry your camera, so save your money for some better glass instead!

Late to the party but honestly, for a wedding, reliability is everything. I totally get the sticker shock on the official one but you're mostly paying for the weather sealing and the magnesium alloy build. I've used some cheap ones that felt like they might snap if I tightened them too much on a tripod... not great for peace of mind. If you dont want to pay for the Canon BG-E20 Battery Grip, check out the Meike MK-5D4 Pro Battery Grip. It is usually pretty solid and doesnt feel as hollow as the super budget ones. Another one I've seen people use as a backup is the Pixel BG-E20 Battery Grip for Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. The buttons have a decent click to them. Just a heads up tho, make sure you're using official batteries or at least something reputable like the Watson LP-E6N Li-Ion Battery Pack inside the grip. Third-party grips sometimes get weird with generic batteries and show the wrong percentage... basically test it a bunch before the wedding so you aren't stressing mid-vows!

Like someone mentioned, third-party is fantastic! I tried a budget option and:

  • Connection points dont fail under load
  • Power delivery stays consistent throughout shoots
  • Vertical controls feel amazing... honestly love it!
