What are the must-have battery grips for Canon EOS 5D Mark IV?

Hey everyone! I finally upgraded to the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and I am absolutely loving the image quality and performance so far. However, I have been doing more professional portrait sessions and long wedding shoots lately, and I am finding that shooting vertically for hours is really starting to strain my wrist. Plus, I find myself swapping out LP-E6N batteries way more often than I expected during long events, which is a bit of a hassle when things are moving fast.

I have been looking into getting a battery grip to help with the ergonomics and overall battery life, but I am a bit torn on which way to go. The official Canon BG-E20 seems like the safest bet, especially since it features the magnesium alloy build and weather sealing that matches the 5D IV body, but that price tag is pretty steep for what it is. On the other hand, I see brands like Vello and Neewer offering similar functionality for a fraction of the cost.

I am mostly concerned about the build quality and whether the shutter button and dials feel mushy on the cheaper versions. I also want to make sure the weather sealing is actually reliable because I do a lot of outdoor work in unpredictable conditions.

Has anyone here used both the official Canon grip and some of the third-party alternatives? Is the official one really worth the extra investment for the 5D Mark IV, or is there a specific third-party model that you swear by for professional use?

In my experience, i totally get the struggle with the wrist strain cuz those long weddings are brutal. basically, u gotta realize that the grip isnt just a plastic box; it actually integrates with the cameras internal communication and weather sealing. here is what i recommend:

  • go with the official brand from canon
  • avoid the plastic third-party alternatives for pro work
  • prioritize the metal build for durability honestly, as a pro, i gotta be cautious here because i had issues with the cheaper third-party brands and it was reallyyy disappointing. the weather sealing on the knock-offs just wasnt as good as expected and it was pretty much a disaster when it failed me during a light drizzle once. ngl, the shutter button felt like a sponge too... so frustrating. u could get lucky, but for paid gigs? just get the official one. its worth it for the peace of mind. gl!
