I recently picked up a Canon EOS 6D Mark II, and while I love the low-light performance, I really need a reliable external flash for some upcoming indoor event work. I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options out there! I’ve been looking at the Canon 430EX III-RT, but I’ve also heard great things about third-party brands like Godox for a much better price. I’m mainly looking for something with fast recycle times and solid E-TTL support for run-and-gun shooting. My budget is flexible, but I’d like to stay under $350 if possible. Which flash models have you found work most consistently with the 6D Mark II’s system for the best value?
so quick question - u shooting weddings or small parties? if recycle time is priority, maybe check these alternatives:
- Godox V860III-C Flash for Canon
- Yongnuo YN685 II for Canon
tbh Li-ion is *way* faster!
Seconding the recommendation above!! Tbh I've had issues with expensive gear failing... just get the Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon. It's only $130 and works great with E-TTL.
For your situation, i think third-party is highkey the way to go right now. For the Canon EOS 6D Mark II, you really want something that can keep up without overheating or lagging during busy indoor events! Here's what I recommend:
- Godox V1-C Flash for Canon - This is literally amazing for indoor work! It has a 76Ws output and a round head for much smoother light falloff. The 2600mAh Li-ion battery is the big winner—it gives you a 1.5s recycle time at full power which is wayyy faster than old-school AAs. Plus, it's usually under $260.
- Godox V860III-C Speedlight for Canon - This is basically a beast for run-and-gun shooting. It has a GN60 rating and uses the same Li-ion tech as the V1 but with a standard head. The E-TTL integration is pretty much flawless in my experience and it's even cheaper at around $230.
- Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT - If you want to stay native, this is solid and compact. But honestly... it's only GN43 and recycles much slower—i think it's like 3.5 seconds on AA batteries? Kind of a bummer for fast events. I'd definately grab the Godox V1-C Flash for Canon. The built-in 2.4GHz X-system makes it so easy to add more lights later if you want to get fancy with off-camera setups. gl! 👍
Helpful thread 👍
Saw this earlier but just getting back to it now... totally agree with the sentiment here. I used to be a total brand snob with my Canon EOS 6D Mark II until i realized i was paying a massive premium for basically the same performance. One thing to keep in mind tho is that the third-party brands are actually leading the way with things like integrated radio systems. It makes jumping into off-camera lighting way easier down the road compared to the older tech. Definitely dont feel like you're losing out by not having the Canon logo on your flash.
Any updates on this?
