Hey everyone! I’ve recently started taking on more wedding gigs and I finally upgraded my kit to a Canon EOS 6D Mark II. While the low-light performance on this sensor is pretty impressive, I’m finding that I really need a more robust external flash setup to handle those dimly lit reception halls and quick-paced dance floor shots.
Right now, I’m using an older, cheaper speedlite, but it just can't keep up. The recycle times are way too slow, causing me to miss key moments, and the TTL exposure is often inconsistent when I'm bouncing light off high ceilings. I’m looking for something that is reliable and integrates perfectly with the 6D Mark II’s autofocus assist.
I have a few specific needs:
I’ve heard great things about both the Canon 600EX II-RT and some of the newer Godox models like the V1, but I’m torn between sticking with native gear or going for a more affordable third-party option. Since I’m still building my business, I’d love to stay under $450 if I can.
What specific external flashes would you recommend for a 6D Mark II user focusing on wedding work?
I know everyone is hyping up Godox right now, and they are definitely solid for the price, but honestly, for weddings I still prefer going the native route or checking out Westcott. When you are in a dark reception hall, the AF assist beam on the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT is just way more reliable than the third-party stuff I have tried on my 6D Mark II. If you pick one up used or refurbished, it fits right in your budget and the TTL is basically foolproof. The build quality on the Canon is also a huge step up. It is weather-sealed, which has saved me during rainy outdoor ceremonies more than once. I know people hate AA batteries, but if you pair it with a Canon CP-E4N Battery Pack, the recycle time becomes insanely fast, definitely hitting that sub-1.5s mark you need for dance floor shots. If you really want that Li-ion convenience without the Godox quirks, check out the Westcott FJ80 II Universal Speedlight. It has a super intuitive touchscreen and the color consistency is way better than most cheap speedlites I have used. Basically, if you can find a used 600EX II-RT, just grab it. The peace of mind knowing it will talk to your camera perfectly every single time is worth the extra hunt. Third-party is cool for saving cash, but the AF assist alone makes native gear a better investment for weddings imo.
Quick reply while I have a sec... honestly skip the AA battery models. The Godox V1-C Li-ion Round Head Flash for Canon hits that 1.5s recycle time easily because of the 7.2V 2600mAh battery. For a cheaper but equally fast alternative, check the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-Ion Flash for Canon. Both support E-TTL II and high-speed sync perfectly with the 6D II.
Congrats on the upgrade! I went through a similar struggle when I started doing more indoor events. My old setup was using four AA batteries and the recycle time was honestly a nightmare... I kept missing the kiss or the cake cutting because the capacitors just couldnt charge fast enough. I eventually switched to a unit that uses a dedicated lithium-ion battery and the performance jump was insane. I actually tracked the cycle times and found I was getting consistent pops under 1.2 seconds at quarter power, which is exactly what you need for those rapid-fire reception shots. Moving away from standard alkaline or NiMH made the biggest difference in my workflow. Now I can usually get through an entire eight-hour shift on just one or two batteries without the TTL getting wonky as the power dips.
