Hey everyone, I have been diving much deeper into landscape photography lately, specifically focusing on night sky shots and long exposures during the golden hour. I am still using my Canon EOS 5D Mark III, which I absolutely love, but I am finding it really difficult to get sharp shots when I am working in Bulb mode. Using the internal timer is okay for shorter shots, but once I go past thirty seconds, it becomes a real hassle to hold the shutter down manually.
I am looking for a solid remote shutter release that can handle some serious use in the field. I have been looking at a few different options online, but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the choices. I really want to avoid any camera shake at all costs. Specifically, I am looking for something with these features:
I saw the official Canon RS-80N3, but it seems a bit basic for the price. On the other hand, some of the cheaper third-party ones look like they might break if they get a little cold or damp. Does anyone have a specific brand or model they recommend for the 5D Mark III that is durable and easy to use for long exposures?
I totally agree that you dont need to overspend, but build quality matters when you're fumbling in the dark. I love the Pixel TW-283 N3 Wireless Timer Remote Control because it works wired or wireless for those star trails. For a simpler wired option, the Phottix TR-90 Digital Timer Remote N3 is super rugged and the backlit screen is actually readable. Both are way more reliable than those super cheap clones.
Hey! I totally get not wanting to drop a ton of cash on the official Canon gear. I went through the same thing with my 5D Mark III and found that you really dont need to spend $100 plus just to get a solid timer. I have been using the Neewer Digital Timer Remote Shutter Release N3 for about two years now and it hasnt failed me yet, even in some light rain. It has the intervalometer you mentioned for star trails and the screen is backlit, which is a total lifesaver when you are fumbling around in the dark. It feels a bit more plasticky than the Canon version, but for a fraction of the price, it gets the job done perfectly. Just a tip: always pull the batteries out when you are done because the screen can slow-drain them in your bag if a button gets bumped.
I'd compare the JJC MET-B Multi-Functional Timer Remote for better weather sealing against the Viltrox MC-C3 Timer Remote Control for pure value. Both handle those long bulb exposures and star trails perfectly fine, tbh.
