Hey everyone! I’ve been using my Canon 6D Mark II for a while now, but I’m really starting to feel the strain during long wedding shoots. I’m looking for a solid battery grip to improve the ergonomics, especially for vertical shots, and to get that extra juice for day-long sessions. I’ve been eyeing the official Canon BG-E21, but it’s a bit expensive. I’ve seen third-party options from brands like Vello and Neewer, but I’m worried about the build quality and whether they maintain the weather sealing. Does the shutter button feel as responsive on the cheaper ones, or should I just bite the bullet and buy the Canon original? What grips are you guys using for your 6DII?

Ok so, I tried the cheap Neewer NW-6DII Battery Grip (around $45) and honestly, it was a letdown. The shutter button was sooo mushy and felt super flimsy. For a budget pick that actually works, I recommend the Vello BG-C16 Battery Grip for Canon EOS 6D Mark II. It’s about $80 and much closer to the official Canon BG-E21 Battery Grip feel. If you’re doing weddings, dont risk the dirt-cheap stuff... it’s just not worth it.

Re: "Works great for me" - glad to hear it, but for professional wedding work I'm way more cautious about what I put on my body. In my experience over the years, the real deal-breaker with third-party grips is the environmental sealing. I've looked at the internals of a few of these and the Canon BG-E21 Battery Grip is the only one that actually matches the weather resistance of the 6DII. The cheap clones usually skip the rubber gaskets entirely. If you're shooting an outdoor ceremony and it starts pouring, that's where you'll regret the $50 savings... seriously. Plus, the communication pins on some of those cheaper units are notoriously flaky with genuine Canon LP-E6N Lithium-Ion Battery packs. If you just need more runtime without the bulk, you could always skip the grip and just buy a couple of the newer Canon LP-E6NH batteries. They have a bit more capacity than the stock ones and work fine in that body. But if you really need that vertical shutter, just look for a used OEM grip on a site like MPB or KEH. Itll be way more reliable than any knockoff during a long wedding day tho, definitely worth it imo.

Does the shutter button feel as responsive on the cheaper ones, or should I just bite the bullet and buy the Canon original? Yeah I totally get this worry. I'm actually on the fence for a 6DII grip myself and its EXACTLY these things that stop me from pulling the trigger on some of the cheaper ones. Not sure about the specific build quality of every brand but I've always heard stories of third-party grips causing weird battery drain issues or even, you know, not giving consistent power to the camera which can be a real headache. Especially for something like a wedding where you need EVERYTHING to just WORK. I mean, the official Canon one is pricey, but its for a REASON, right? You dont wanna risk messing with an expensive body just to save a few bucks on an accessory. The weather sealing thing is a BIG one too, its like, how can you even verify that on an unbranded grip? Its a tough call.
