My old 2018 Intel MacBook Pro is finally hitting the fan, thermal throttling constantly when I run Premiere. So I need to upgrade to an M3 Pro or Max with at least 36GB unified memory for my freelance editing gigs here in Chicago. My budget is capped at $2500 and I need this sorted by next week.

Normally I just buy certified refurbished directly from Apple because their quality control is basically legendary, but the discounts on the M3 line there are pretty weak right now. So I was thinking about going third-party. My logic was that Best Buy or B&H Photo would have better sales, but Best Buy is locking their deepest discounts behind that My Best Buy Plus membership now, which kinda annoys me. Micro Center has great prices but their local stock for upgraded RAM configs is super hit or miss.

I know how to compare specs, but this weird trend of retailers putting the best sales behind paid member walls or having bizarre regional inventory is throwing me off. Which retailers actually end up being the cheapest for upgraded configs once you factor in all the extra fees? Are there hidden gem sites I should check out?

Building on the earlier suggestion, I tried upgrading my own rig last year and it was a mess.

  • Honestly, buying upgraded RAM configs online is just so frustrating.
  • I ordered one hoping to save cash, but the shipping got delayed twice and I missed my client deadline.
  • I even used B&H Photo Video Price Tracker to watch prices, but local stock was nonexistent anyway.

Check out RefurbMe or other refurb trackers! You can set instant alerts for the exact 36GB M3 config on Apple's official refurb store. Its amazing because you get that legendary Apple quality and warranty but at a huge discount the second it drops. I love this method because it completely bypasses those annoying third-party membership walls!

I was in the exact same boat last month upgrading my video editing rig. B&H Photo is usually my go-to for those custom 36GB RAM configs because they dont charge tax if you use their Payboo card, which saved me a ton. Honestly, PriceDropCatch has been awesome for tracking those specific M3 Pro price cuts since they fluctuate daily. Im super satisfied with my M3 Pro from B&H, no complaints at all.
