Trying to organize holiday lists for my extended family this year since we are scattered across three states. Since we already spend a fortune on shipping, I really need a free app.
I did some digging and saw Elfster and Giftster. My logic was Elfster would work, but it seems geared towards Secret Santa rather than open list sharing. Then with Giftster, I was thinking it might be good, but some reviews say the interface is too clunky for older folks. My 70-year-old parents need to use this easily.
Is there a simpler free option that lets us share lists and claim items secretly?
Just saw this thread and thought I'd throw in my two cents. If you want to avoid constant tech support calls from your parents, I would suggest going with Wishlistr. You can't really go wrong with their basic online lists. But a quick warning: you might want to consider how these platforms handle page rendering. A lot of the newer apps run heavy JavaScript frameworks that absolutely crawl on older tablets or phones, which is usually why older folks complain about things being clunky. Make sure to pick something that runs as a lightweight web page rather than forcing them to download an app from the app store. That just leads to forgotten passwords and headaches. Also, be careful with the claim functionality. You want to make sure to test the shared link in an incognito window first. Sometimes these sites have weird caching issues where the owner can accidentally see who claimed what if they share a session cookie. Anyway, just my thoughts. I've been using Share Product to keep track of my birthday list and it's super easy to share with everyone.
Late to the party but I had issues with Giftster too, honestly it was not as good as expected and my older folks just gave up. If you want to keep it free and simple, check out Things To Get Me. Its super basic and the best part is people dont even need to create an account to claim stuff. That is a total lifesaver for parents who always forget passwords. It does have some ads on the free version which is annoying, but it gets the job done without costing a dime. Just make the list, send the link, and they can check boxes easily.
TL;DR: Try Wishybox. Its totally free and way simpler than Giftster for older parents. My family switched to it last year because my tech-challenged uncle couldnt figure out Elfster. You just make a list, share the link, and people can claim stuff without you seeing it. No clunky app installs needed since it runs great in a mobile browser.
