Ive been saving for a trip to the Everglades next month and finally got my R7 but now Im stuck on glass. I saw the RF 600mm f11 is cheap but some say the f11 is a nightmare in the shade. Would the 800mm f11 be better or is that overkill for the crop sensor?

I totally agree with what was just mentioned about the reach. In my experience with the R7, that 1.6x crop factor really changes the math for these long primes. If you go with the Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM, youre looking at a 1280mm equivalent which is honestly a nightmare to keep steady without a gimbal head. Since youre watching the budget, keep these technical specs in mind:

  • The Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM is usually cheaper and way more versatile.
  • f11 on the R7 sensor hits the diffraction limit quickly, which can soften fine feather detail.
  • Minimum focus distance on the primes is pretty long, making close-up gator shots tough. Ive tried many setups and for a budget glades trip, the 100-400mm is actually the sleeper hit. It gives you a much better aperture for those shaded boardwalks.

Spot on about that crop factor. Ive been shooting wildlife for decades and honestly, a 1280mm equivalent is just massive to keep steady. If money is tight, f/11 glass is a steal, but youll definitely need to crank your ISO way up. Dont forget to budget for extra batteries tho... that tracking works the body pretty hard.
