Which portrait lens should I buy for my new Canon EOS R8?

So torn between the RF 85mm f2 and the cheap 50mm 1.8 for my R8. The 85mm is stretching my $600 budget but i'm scared the 50mm wont look pro enough for this wedding I have in 3 weeks.

  • budget: $600ish
  • use: portraits/weddings

Which one should I just buy already?

tbh I went through this exact struggle when I got my R8. I grabbed the Canon RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM thinking it would be my endgame portrait lens, but unfortunately the autofocus drive is surprisingly loud and clunky. I had issues with it hunting during a candlelit ceremony last summer and it almost made me miss the important shots. The Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM is fine for the price, but it just doesnt have that pro look for weddings. The background blur is kinda messy and distracting imo.

  • RF 85mm: great stabilization and sharp, but slow focus motors and feels plastic for the price.
  • RF 50mm: dirt cheap and tiny, but feels like a toy and lacks that creamy bokeh you want for portraits. Honestly, just get the 85mm f2. Its not as good as expected for the money but the 50mm wont cut it for a wedding.

tbh the Canon RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM is way better for weddings because of the 5-stop image stabilization. Since the R8 doesnt have IBIS, you really need that for sharp low-light shots. Also the 0.5x macro is perfect for close-up ring photos. The Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM is okay but honestly lacks the reach and stabilization you need for a pro look.

Late to the party but this whole thread is 💯. Glad I found it.
