I'm looking for a standard prime lens that balances quality and price.

The best Canon RF 50mm lens depends on needs:

  • RF 50mm F1.2 L USM: Ultimate image quality, creamy bokeh, and pro build, but heavy (950g) and expensive .
  • RF 50mm F1.4 L VCM: Balanced choice—sharp, lighter, video-friendly, and affordable vs. F1.2 .
  • RF 50mm F1.8 STM: Budget pick, compact, great for casual use .

For versatility, the F1.4 L VCM shines.

To add to the point above: i would suggest being really careful with the build quality on the cheaper primes. You want something that wont just fall apart after a few months of heavy use. Reliability is everything honestly because gear failure is the worst feeling.

  • check the mount for any wobbling
  • make sure the lens cap actually stays on tight
  • watch out for dust getting behind the glass Actually it reminds me of this time i went to the beach with my old gear and got sand in literally every crevice. I was so worried about the lens but the real problem was my tripod legs getting jammed. I spent the whole night in the hotel bathtub trying to rinse out the grit while my wife was trying to sleep. She was so annoyed because the clicking sound of the sand was driving her crazy. I ended up just buying a new tripod anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.

For most photographers: Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM.
