I'm finding the built-in screen on my R6 II a bit limiting for critical focus when shooting 4K video. I really need something bright for outdoor shoots that supports 10-bit recording via HDMI. Are you guys preferring the Atomos Ninja V or are there better budget-friendly options that play nice with Canon’s UI? What's your go-to monitor?

> Are you guys preferring the Atomos Ninja V or are there better budget-friendly options? Sooo, in my experience, Atomos Ninja V 5-inch 4K HDMI Recording Monitor is the standard for 10-bit. But for outdoor brightness, PortKeys LH5P II 5.5-inch High Bright Monitor is actualy better tho!!

I went through this last year. Ngl, I was totally overwhelmed by prices. I eventually snagged the Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5-inch 12G HDR for about $795. * Budget win: Found mine used for way less!
* Bright: It's basically 2500 nits, so outdoors is fine Basically, your gonna be happy with the 10-bit recording quality, i think. It’s been a solid journey and I’m satisfied with how it works. gl!

Ok so, background info—outdoor monitoring is all about 'nits.' Most built-in screens are only 500-800 nits, which is why you can't see anything in direct light. This matters because if you can't see focus peaking in the sun, you're gonna miss shots and waste footage. So basically the consensus is the Ninja is great for recording, but the PortKeys or Blackmagic are better for visibility. Honestly, I'm still kinda new to this and I had issues with cheap monitors having terrible color shift. It was so disappointing and not as good as expected... > Are you guys preferring the Atomos Ninja V or are there better budget-friendly options? TL;DR: Ninja for recording, PortKeys for brightness. If you want a budget-friendly outdoor option, check out the Feelworld LUT5 5.5 Inch Ultra Bright 3000nit On-Camera Monitor. It doesn't record internally, but it's cheap and CRAZY bright. Otherwise, stick with a used Atomos Ninja V 5" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor like the others mentioned. GL!

Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!

To add to the point above: I have had a lot of frustration trying to find a reliable setup for my R6 II and unfortunately, several monitors I tried were not as good as expected for 10-bit work. The glare on standard screens is just brutal and the focus peaking on budget units is often too thick to be useful for critical focus.

  • Just get any high-brightness unit from Feelworld if you need to see in the sun and dont want to spend a fortune.
  • I had issues with the colors being way off on the cheaper stuff, so you might want to look at any of the SmallHD offerings instead for better accuracy.
  • Basically, avoid the really cheap no-name brands because the HDMI connection tends to be super flaky with Canon bodies and its just not worth the hassle.

Tbh, I’m gonna go against the grain here and suggest you rethink if you actually need a 'recorder' at all. Since you're on the R6 II, that body already handles 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording onto V60 or V90 SD cards perfectly fine. Unless you specifically need ProRes for a heavy post-production workflow, youre basically paying a premium for recording tech that adds bulk and drains your batteries faster, you know? If your main struggle is critical focus and outdoor visibility, I’d actually recommend the SmallHD Indie 5 Touchscreen On-Camera Monitor. It’s around $1,300, but from a technical perspective, their PageOS software is leagues ahead of Atomos. The focus peaking is way more granular, and it has EL Zone exposure tools which are much more intuitive than standard zebras for Canon sensors. If that’s too pricey, look at the Desview R6 UHB 5.5 Inch Ultra High Brightness 2800nit Touch Screen Monitor. It's a budget-friendly 'light cannon' (usually around $250) that’s specifically built for outdoor shoots. Idk if I’d trust its color accuracy for a final grade compared to a SmallHD, but for nailing focus in direct sun? It’s basically unbeatable for the price. Just some food for thought before you jump into the Atomos ecosystem, right?
