honestly im about ready to throw this camera out the window. i bought the canon rebel t7 a few months ago for family events and i just got this basic third party flash off amazon but it literally wont fire no matter what i do. i spent hours searching online and apparently canon decided to remove the center sync pin on the hot shoe for this specific model which is just... why?? its so frustrating because i have my sisters engagement party coming up in three weeks here in seattle and the indoor lighting at the venue is gonna be absolute trash.

i really need an external flash that actually talks to this camera without me having to buy some super expensive pro gear that costs more than the body did. im looking to spend maybe $100 or $150 max because i already feel like i wasted money on the first one i bought and i dont want to keep making mistakes. i just want something reliable that wont give me a headache every time i try to take a photo. i heard some godox or maybe newer canon ones might work but im so confused by the technical specs now.

does anyone know which specific flashes definitely work with the t7s weird missing pin setup? i really need something that supports ttl because i dont have time to fiddle with manual settings while people are dancing...

Re: "Just saw this thread. Yeah, that missing center..."

  • Ugh it was such a massive headache when Canon pulled that move!! Basically everyone was panicking because it felt like a total cash grab, but luckily the third party brands caught up super fast. Since you already got some solid advice on the bigger Godox units, I gotta suggest the Godox TT350C Mini TTL Speedlite for your budget! It is tiny but honestly amazing for family events. Since it has full TTL support, the camera does all the math for you... no more fiddling with manual power while people are dancing! It fits way under that $150 limit too, leaving you plenty of cash for some Panasonic Eneloop Pro Rechargeable AA Batteries which are a total lifesaver for recycle times. Just remember to bounce the light off the ceiling if it is white or light-colored. It makes the shadows way softer so everyone looks 10x better. Youre gonna kill it at the party!

Just saw this thread. Yeah, that missing center pin on the T7 and the SL3 was a massive headache when it first dropped. Basically, Canon tried to lock people into their ecosystem by forcing the flash to communicate entirely through the electronic data pins instead of using the universal legacy trigger. Most older third-party flashes just dont have the specific firmware protocols to handle that. If you want something that isnt huge, the Canon Speedlite EL-100 Compact Flash is a solid bet. It’s small, runs on two AAs, and since it’s first-party, the compatibility is guaranteed. It does full TTL and even works as an optical sender if you ever get into off-camera stuff later. Tbh, if the Godox ones mentioned earlier feel too bulky, you should check out the Godox TT350C Mini TTL Flash for Canon. It’s way cheaper, around $85 usually, and it definitely works with the T7 pinout. I’ve used it on a 250D which has the same crippled hot shoe and it fires every time. Just make sure the firmware is updated via the Godox G2 software if you get an older unit. For resources, check out the FlashHavoc website... they have a whole breakdown on which specific serial numbers or firmware versions fixed the T7 compatibility issues for third-party brands. It saves you from guessing if a random Amazon listing will actually work or not. Stick to the V2 or II versions of Godox gear and you’re usually safe.
