I've been shooting with the Canon EOS R5 for a few months now, and while the image quality is incredible, the battery life is a bit of a struggle during long wedding days. I'm looking to pick up a battery grip to help with both ergonomics and power, but I'm torn between the official Canon BG-R10 and some of the cheaper third-party alternatives like Neewer or Vello. Is the build quality and weather sealing on the official Canon grip worth the extra $200, or do the third-party ones handle the vertical controls and dual batteries just as well? I really need something reliable for professional work. Which grip do you guys think is the best overall value for the R5?
For your situation, I'd go with the Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip. Comparing it to the Neewer BG-R10 Vertical Battery Grip, the official one has way better weather sealing and build quality, while third-party options feel kinda cheap. Ngl, for long wedding days, you need that reliability. I’ve used both and the Canon grip just fits perfectly. Definitely worth the extra $200 for pro work tho!!
> Is the build quality and weather sealing on the official Canon grip worth the extra $200? I went through this last year. Ok so, third-party options like the Meike MK-R5 Pro Vertical Battery Grip usually skip high-end sealing to save cash. I actually tried one and it worked fine indoors, but the buttons felt kinda mushy... I eventually bit the bullet on the Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip (as mentioned before) for that *solid* build. It's expensive but honestly amazing... u really get what u pay for with reliability!! gl
For your situation, remember the R5 needs precise voltage for 12fps H+ burst mode, and third-party options like the Vello BG-C18 Battery Grip for Canon EOS R5 often fail to trigger it. losing your frame rate mid-wedding is a huge risk, so i'd agree the Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip is the best bet to handle Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Batteries correctly. it's pricey but essential for pro reliability. peace
Would love to know this too
Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!
Regarding what #4 said about "Ok adding this to my list of things to try..." - you might want to consider the risks before buying a generic version. I agree with the previous points about staying with the official brand for reliability.
