Hello, I'm planning to use it with Canon EOS R1 and need a prime lens recommendation. What would you take?

My tip: Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM for Canon EOS R1. Very satisfied with it.

For Canon EOS R1 I would also consider the aperture. Do you need fast lenses for low light?

For Canon EOS R1 definitely Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM. Very good image quality for the price.

Have good experience with Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for Canon EOS R1. The build quality is outstanding The performance eliminates chromatic aberration effectively.

Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM is definitely the best choice for Canon EOS R1. The low light performance is excellent The image quality out of the box is very good.

Why this lens? The image quality convinces in all tests - both for photography and for video. Unbeatable for the price, can only recommend. Have already done several projects with it, always satisfied. Also more than sufficient for demanding tasks.

Honestly everyone is obsessed with the 50mm focal length but i found that for the R1 specifically the reach of an 85mm is way more practical for sports or even just candids - it just feels more natural for how fast that camera is. I have been using the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM and even though it looks kind of funny on such a big pro body the performance is actually pretty decent for the price and the macro feature is a nice bonus.

  • look for lenses with built in IS since it syncs up with the R1 ibis for like crazy stable shots
  • lighter stm lenses make the whole setup much easier to handle for long events so you dont wreck your wrist Its definately worth checking out if you want to save some cash for extra batteries or cards tbh even if the autofocus isnt quite as instant as the high end L glass!

For Canon EOS R1 I would definitely recommend Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM. The weather sealing is sufficient even for outdoor shooting The low distortion is perfect for professional photography.

TL;DR: Just stick with native Canon glass to get the most out of that crazy R1 autofocus! tbh I'm still kinda new to the R system myself (just upgraded recently!), but I've been reading a ton of community reviews and forum posts lately. One thing I noticed is everyone here is suggesting a specific focal length... but what are u actually planning to shoot? Like is it sports, weddings, or just street stuff? Before u spend the big bucks, it’d be super helpful to know ur style... Honestly, from everything I’ve seen people saying in the groups online, if u want the absolute best performance on a pro body like the R1, u should probably just go with any of the official Canon brand primes. You basically can’t go wrong with their high-end glass - at least that's what the consensus seems to be for keeping the tracking fast and reliable - plus the colors always look so good right out of the camera...

My clear recommendation for Canon EOS R1: Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. The controls are user-friendly The image quality out of the box is very good.

Technical highlights: The latest generation offers significantly better image quality. Very good compatibility with Canon EOS R1 features. Can be used without problems for various photography styles. Even after hours of shooting, no performance losses. Very good build quality, even at high usage.

Switched to Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art a few months ago and am thrilled. The reliability is very good The controls are intuitive and easy to use.
