Finally pulled the trigger on the R5 Mark II and my wallet is crying lol. Now I need a solid one-lens setup for a trip to Japan next month and I'm totally torn between a few options.
Budget is around $2000 since the camera already cost a fortune. I'm mostly shooting family stuff and some street photography while traveling. Which one is actually the better value for someone who wants to leave it on the camera 90% of the time?
I really think you might want to consider the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM instead of the more expensive options. I know people say f/4 isnt enough, but for a family trip to Japan, youre gonna be walking like 20,000 steps a day. Be careful with those heavy lenses like the 28-70mm; carrying a brick around Kyoto is a recipe for a sore neck and honestly, you might end up leaving it in the hotel room because it becomes a chore to haul around. The 24-105mm is super reliable and gives you that extra reach for street photography where you cant always get close to the subject. Since your wallet is already hurting, saving that $1000 means you can buy a really good strap like the Peak Design Slide Camera Strap and maybe some extra Canon LP-E6P Battery packs. I would suggest getting a decent protector for the front element too, like a Hoya 77mm NXT Plus UV Filter, just to stay safe in crowded subways or rainy weather. Youll appreciate the lighter weight when youre chasing family around all day. Just bump your ISO a bit if it gets dark; the R5II handles noise like a champ anyway. Better to have the versatile range and some cash left for actual travel experiences than a heavy lens youre constantly worried about scratching or dropping... let me know if you need help picking out a bag too!
> RF 24-105mm f/4L (cheaper and more reach but is f/4 enough?) Honestly, if you just dropped that much coin on an R5II, putting the f/4 on it feels like a total waste of that sensor. I had issues with that lens on my last trip... it was just way too slow for indoor shrines and the bokeh is kinda boring if I am being real. Unfortunately, you really do get what you pay for here and the f/4 is just not as good as expected for a flagship body. I know the $2000 budget is tight, but the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is the only one that actually does the resolution justice. That extra stop makes a massive difference for evening street photography in Japan. The 28-70 is a dream but trust me, your neck will absolutely hate you by day three. Just bite the bullet and find a deal on the 24-70, it stays on my camera 95% of the time.
Coming back to this, unfortunately I had issues with the f/4 lens failing to resolve enough detail on that sensor. It was not as good as expected for evening street photography. You should prioritize the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM.
