What are the essential accessories for a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV?

What do I actually need to make this 5D Mark IV usable for a wedding in two weeks because I feel like I am drowning here? I have been shooting on a 7D for like eight years so I thought the jump to full frame would be easy but man this thing eats batteries way faster than I expected especially when I mess with the live view.

I am in Philly and just dropped most of my savings on the body so I only have like 300 bucks left to gear up. Are there specific CF cards that wont bottleneck the buffer? My old SD cards are giving me that busy signal and it is driving me crazy. Do I need a grip or just more LP-E6N packs? Just tell me what is actually essential before I lose it...

Honestly tho I have to disagree with spending big on Canon batteries! Just grab a BM Premium LP-E6NH Dual Battery Pack for cheap and save your cash. The real lifesaver for that busy signal is a fast CF card. I love the SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB CompactFlash Card 160MB/s! It is seriously fantastic and makes buffer issues disappear without blowing your budget!

Unfortunately the SD slot is capped at UHS-I, which isnt as good as expected. Grab a Lexar Professional 1066x 128GB CompactFlash to fix that buffer lag on a tight budget.

I totally agree that the battery drain is a total nightmare on this body compared to the 7D. You really have to be careful when you are shooting a long day like a wedding because that live view is a power hog.

  • Make sure you prioritize getting extra batteries over a grip for now. A grip is nice but it adds weight, and having extra packs in your pocket is a safer bet.
  • I would suggest only using high-speed CF cards for the wedding. If you put a slow SD card in the second slot, it can bottleneck the entire camera even if the primary card is fast. The jump to full frame is steep but you can definitely handle it... just focus on reliability first and dont overcomplicate the setup.
