Im seriously about to lose my mind with this R6 setup. I finally made the jump from my old 5D Mark IV to an EOS R6 a few weeks ago and I really thought the transition was gonna be seamless but its honestly been a total nightmare so far. I have a bag full of glass that I love, specifically my Sigma 35mm Art and my Tamron 70-200 G2, and I just cant get them to behave. I bought this cheap knockoff adapter from some random brand on Amazon because I figured its just a metal tube with some pins, right? How hard can it be? Well turns out it sucks.
The autofocus is just hunting constantly and half the time it doesnt even recognize the lens is attached. I was trying to do a small family session here in Seattle over the weekend and I kept getting that stupid communication error message right in the middle of the shoot. I had to keep turning the camera off and on again while the clients were just standing there waiting. It was so embarrassing.
I have a wedding coming up in about three weeks and I really dont have the budget to go out and drop five grand on all new RF glass right now. My budget is probably around 150 or 200 bucks if I can find an adapter that actually works reliably with third party lenses. I looked for the official Canon one with the control ring but everywhere near me is sold out or backordered until forever.
Has anyone had any actual luck with other brands like Viltrox or Commlite when using Sigma or Tamron glass? Or am I just wasting my time trying to save money? I just need something that doesnt drop the connection every ten minutes and actually lets the eye-af do its job without stuttering. Is there a specific one that plays nice with the Sigma Art series especially? I'm desperate at this point...
Ugh, I had issues with those cheap tubes too. Unfortunately, my Viltrox EF-EOS R Mount Adapter was not as good as expected with my Sigma Art glass.
Re: "TL;DR: Stop using the knockoffs and get the..." - basically everyone here is telling you to go official Canon, but since stock is a mess right now, I would suggest looking at the Meike MK-EFTR-B Control Ring Mount Adapter. Its been much more reliable for me than the super cheap tubes. But a huge warning tho... you might want to consider your lens firmware before blaming the adapter entirely. Those Sigma Art and Tamron G2 lenses often need updates to play nice with the R6. I highly suggest grabbing the Sigma USB Dock UD-01 for your 35mm and the Tamron TAP-in Console for that 70-200 if you dont have them. Without the latest firmware, you are gonna get that hunting and eye-af stutter regardless of which metal tube you use. Be careful with those connections, one bad pin can ruin your whole wedding shoot. Just my two cents after dealing with this same headache last year.
TL;DR: Stop using the knockoffs and get the standard Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. It is usually $99 and it actually works without errors. I was super nervous about my transition to the R series too, so I decided to play it safe. I bought the basic Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and honestly im very satisfied. I use it with my Sigma glass and it is rock solid. I havent had a single communication error or any issues with the eye tracking. It honestly feels like using a native lens. The control ring version is cool but if its sold out just skip it. The basic one is cheaper and way easier to find right now. I wouldnt trust a wedding to a Viltrox or Commlite if I could afford the official one for a hundred bucks. I've seen too many people complain about those third-party ones having a weird wiggle or losing connection if you bump the lens too hard. If you are really in a pinch and the Canon is sold out everywhere near Seattle, the Viltrox EF-EOS R Mount Adapter is probably the next best thing, but seriously... try to find the Canon one first. It fits your budget perfectly and will save your sanity for that wedding. The peace of mind is worth the extra few dollars over the cheap junk that keeps failing on you.
This is exactly what I needed to hear. Youre a lifesaver honestly.
